So I have a unique HK SL8 project underway and the long heavy target barrel really doesn't lend itself to the direction of the project. I am looking to shorten it to 18.6", thread the muzzle 1/2x28, and re-contour the barrel to make it a little lighter on the front for off hand shooting.

Looking for suggestions on who to trust this work to either locally (Calgary, Red Deer, or Edmonton) or across country. Only thing to note is the further it goes the more it costs to ship, where as locally I can just drop it off and pick it up.

If I don't plan on doing local, Herron Arms and TacOrd come to mind. What do you folks think? Any good local options I should contact?

Tac Ord is amazing (but he is busy till August) and Ian Herron does excellent barrel work aswell!!!

Shipping won't cost much more IF you have a venture card. #### it only costs me 30-50$ to send a big heavy rifle way out west from Ont.

I would call around, not everyone has the tools needed to remove the barrel from an HK so that will likely limit your choices.
Once you find someone that can remove the barrel the work you want done is fairly simple so I wouldn't worry too much about who is doing it as long as they understand what you want to end up with as a finished product.

Have you found a source for the other parts you were looking for to do this project? Should be pretty sweet when you're done if you can get everything needed to finish it.

I certainly have found a source for my parts, I will be ordering them soon and once they land I will be proceeding with the barrel work.

Good point on the specialized tools, so far I know either CSC or TacOrd are capable of handling the project as they both have the tools and have previously done this kind of work.

As far as the tools to remove the barrel, for the Mandrel I just used a piece of 3/4 round bar and use your bolt face as a reference and grind the same profile. Barrel nut just used a piece of tubeing ground down with 3 lugs to fit the barrel nut.

Another option in Calgary is Range Warrior Accessories. Email kevin@rangewarrioraccessories he might be able to help and the turn around is fast.

Thanks guys, but barrel work already started over 15 months ago with CSC and their contracted machinest who seems very capable but far to busy to be bothered with timely completion of smaller projects. Still waiting on this project to be finished.

I would not reccomend using CSC or Blue Chip Precision to my worst enemy. This is absolutely and utterly ridiculous.

Ha, good luck. Do you know how hard the barrels are?
I've had SL8 and MR223 re-contoured and it ruined some tools doing it...and took forever.
The shop who did it for me.....I will leave un-named....told me "No More".

On a positive note....did not change accuracy of the barrels at all. Also when SL8 barrel was re-mounted did not require any re-zeroing of scope, kind of amazing.
