I've done some searching but have found very little on the topic.

Has anyone shot out there Savage or just replaced the barrel fo the hell of it? Whats the extent that anyone has modified their MKII? (feel free to attach pictures). From what I can tell, a stock replacement and possible trigger work is all anyone has done. Has anyone had a smith do some work for accuracy?

Let's here/see what you've done

There's a guy in the 'states that specializes in Savages. Don't remeber what the outfit is called, but people rave about his work on Rimfire Central.

The synthetic stocks often get replaced, because they are flimsy and don't work well with a scope. The trigger can be tweaked. The bolt can be cleaned up. There are aftermarket scope rails with MOA built in.

I don't know of anyone replacing the barrels, especially "just because". The Savage barrels are usually very accurate or at least have great potential. Rimfire barrels are pretty tough to wear out.

To be quite honest, I don't think there are alot of people doing wild customizing to Savages. Why? I would think because they are a cheap gun that shoot quite well. Why muck with something that works.

I certainly agree with all the points you make. I have a MKII BSEV with an EGW base and Meuller APT and I love it. It shoots great. I'm still wanting to change the stock to a Boyd's Tacticool, the Evolution that's on it is OK, but not quite my style. Also thinking about putting a Rifle Basix trigger into it and tuning it up.

Right now I am into my BSEV for about $700

I was just thinking about buying the cheapest MKII I could find and rebarelling it and customizing it. Thought that maybe I could get an even better shooter in the neighborhood of the same price.

Didnt someone build a MK2 with a match bbl for a 10/22? IIRC they just had to turn and thread the tenon, maybe shorten or lengthen it too but not much work.

I think that was a 77/22 barrel

That was me. It was a 77/22 barrel (which is the same as a 10/22 aside from dual extractor slots) and it did require machining.

OP, let me know if you have any questions.

I will definitely be in contact with you about this. Your build looks fantastic. One question though, did the extractor grooves line up nicely with a barrell designed for a 77/22 on a MKII action?

Yes. The only real question on a rimfire is if it has single or dual extractors. The 10/22 has a single extractor and the 77/22 has dual. If you look at the breech of your Mk.II you will see a groove on either side of the chamber, this is the same setup that the 77/22 has.

From what I have seen, nearly all bolt action rimfire rifles use the same bolt design and set up, with dual extractors and a C-clip over top of the bolt head to hold the extractors in a groove. The breech area is also pretty much identical, with dual grooves placed symmetrically on either side of the chamber.
