Where can a guy get some custom fit-ear plugs made??? I want a pair of those custom moulded jobbies with the string attached that I see everyone on Sporting clays range wearing.

I assume these block atleast as much noise as muffs.......

Any audiologist (hearing-aid guys - ask your doctor) should be able to help out. I'd expect to pay $200-ish. Maybe a tad less.

I'm not sure I've seen the ones with the string, but I paid $50 or so probably 5-8 years back for a set of injection moulded plugs. You sit and have a rubbery material injected into your ear (perfect mold). They are then ejected, and treated to harden. I had mine done at a shoot. I've heard that the plugs are made for swimmers as well, so it should be fairly easy to find an ear guy to do them.

Brad.

i USED to see them at some Costco stores, but i was told they may not have them set up there anymore, but i know i've seen them at Motorcycle shows...

Depends how you have them made. They inject a gel, which hardens into a mold. If that's all you have done, and use the hardened gel, then $50-100.

If, however, your 'ear guy' sends the molds in to get manufactured into hard plastic or some acoustic material (like musician's earplugs) then you're looking at $200.

I had a set of etymmotic ER-4 custom earphones made from some fancy acoustic material. Were free (I had done some work for the fellow), but would have been $200-ish

Paid $65.00 for mine at a hearing aid place. Also injected a rubbery/latex type compound into my ears...then sent them away to be finished. Returned to me in about a week.

I'v often joked about buying a tube of silicone and squirtting that into my ears to make the same thing. Much cheaper than $65.00. :)

We do make them here at TSE by appointment. Our earplugs are made of a soft "insta-mold" material.

check out www.earinc.ca for more details...

BTW our member price is $50 and off the street guys pay $65.

JR

PS: Linda is always looking for people that want to start up their own mini-business doing the same. ;)

For injection moulded plugs:
Check with your local competitive swimming club. They should be able to refer you to an individual or hearing centre that makes what you're looking for.
For those in the Montreal/Eastern Ontario area: You used to be able to get them made at the Montreal Skeet Club, call ahead maybe they still do it.

I've had a couple of the squirt-in-ear-wait-an-hour custom plugs made at shoots. If I had to to it over again I'd probably get a set done where the ear mould is used to make the plugs. From what I've seen a better material is used for those plugs.

My first set didn't last much longer than a year of regular use. I went back to using an electronic headset for clays and only keep the second set of plugs around if I'm gonig to be doing any rifle shooting and want the double up on the hearing protection.

The custom plugs regardless of type give better hearing protection than any of the generic plugs and are probably better than a full headset.

customprotectear.com is where I had mine done. One of their reps will come to you and take a mold. Then they send you the silcone plug a few weeks later. Price was $80 and if you need extra pairs they are cheaper.

Linda will be st up this SATURDAY from 10-2 making E.A.R. insta-molds at the Range...

Normal price is $65 .... special price this time only: $40

(She's training some new providers)

He has over 25 years experience doing custom moulded Silicone ear plugs. He's the best that I know of and still only charges $40 a pair.

You can usually find him at the Hamilton Gun Club during the bigger shoots.

I had these guys do a set for me when they were in Ft McMurray for our trade show. They work better than regular plugs, but when I shoot Centrefire rifle i still wear muffs over them. I think they would be good for shotgun though. BTW I didn't know about the CGN price.

We had them made for us at work, no idea what it cost, but they work great, I got the ones with the channel in them so that I still hear regular conversation with them.
