well I have quite a few ideas and this is only on paper until my first build is complete (should be ready for bear season) Anyway, wondering what actions you guys would recommend and barrels. Kreiger #0 seems to be the lightest I've found so far @ 2lbs.....

Thanks

how deep is your wallet and what does hyper light mean to you?

If you have the $$, contact PGW for one of their superbly built Titanium actions. Rem Ti if you can find them. Or swiss cheese a factory action.

For barrels, I can offer you Shilen and Mcgowen in all their possible contours. McGowen can offer any contour produced and can even flute opening up more options.

For stocks, chat with Ian at Robertson composites. He might be able to work in Carbon fibre and get you something in the ounces.

Although not 'hyper' light, I just got a Savage Edge for S&G. The first thing I thought was "this thing is light". with a fixed Scopechief, it weights around 6.5lbs (bathroom scale) with a factory sporter barrel, steel rings, factory stock. that is amazing for a dirt cheap factory rifles.

I see no problem getting it to 6lbs with a lighter contour barrel and some diet work.

Pretty impressive for something that started life at $350.

Personally I would go with a rem mod 7 and swiss cheese it, take a look at Rifles Inc website, I would do something similar, and possibly slab the action as well. Does anyone know the weight of the rem Ti action? Or PGW Ti action? I wouldn't think it is much lighter than a M7. Or you could try and get a NULA action, they are a sized to the caliber and very light.

Lone wolf makes a 15 once stock, but Robertson is Canadian so there are no export hassles. I have a Mcgowen Winchester Featherweight contour barrel through Jerry, it is just over 2 pounds at it's current 24" length. Pacnor will also make a custom contour so you could get something light through them as well.

When's your bear season?:D..if you're talking spring 2011 you might have a problem..

sorry, my first is an 338edge and spring is bear season, this would be my second and next year some time would be fine for the 6.5 :)

Yah I\ll look at some of the suggestions you guys have made thanks!!

yep get a carbon wrapped barrel i heard there supposed to be better then steel in like every way

So far, no accuracy records have been shot or won with carbon wrapped barrels.

In the past, they worked very poorly. The 'new' stuff is supposed to be improved BUT you still have the same barrel on the inside.

From the reviews I have seen, there even wasn't a huge weight reduction.

But this new style of carbon wrapping did shed heat better for the reviewer.

And we know this barrel is going to be real pricey.

carbon barrel is 2.5# and $600 on top of a custom barrel purchased from one of 4 manufactures, one of which is Broughton, the place I bought my 338 barrel. So it would be about 1200-1300 by the time it as in hand, the needs to be machined.............

No need or benefit to the carbon barrel. Buy a well crafted barrel in the right contour. Save your weight in the quality action and stock. It still requires solid bedding and assembly to function properly.

Don't forget about ring, rail and scope choice. This can also make a big impact on weight. Don't sacrifice a few ounces for #### rings or bases that don't line up properly.

If your hell bent on weight, TI action (PGW is not a bad option), by the time you pay to have a rem action turned into swiss cheese, which also reduces the actions strength.

Good luck on your build. You have some great possibilities. If you are on a budget, look into the savage action, quality barrel and stock. If $ doesn't factor into it, the world is your playground. Fly at er!!

I ended up going with a straight up 284 Win over the 6.5/684. With some of the new powders out there, its hard to outclass the 7mm high BC bullets.

so for close to $1500 installed, you have a barrel that is EXACTLY the same weight as a contoured steel match barrel and likely have similar accuracy.

a match barrel that can start at $250 plus install costs.

Not sure if this is going to catch on anytime soon.

If your objective is hunting, I suggest it may be expensive overkill to go with uber match grade. There is a functional limit to hunting bullet accuracy, so going full-on custom cut rifle is more than you need.

There are practical compromises that can save huge dollars that do not degrade potential accuracy

As an example ( and bear in mind we sell these so there will be a perception of bias) you can get into a match grade barrel with chambering and threading for under $500

the 6.5 norma is a potent cartridge, (I know it very well) but there are others too. Depending on the action you have, the 6.5X55 gives up nothing to the 6.5 norma, and has better barrel life. Same with the 260AI.

"...expensive overkill to go with uber match grade..." Not really a 'may be' thing. An uber match grade barrel won't be hyper-light either.
