Hey Gunnutz

I’m finally in a position to spend a bit of money on a high end bolt action. I’m stuck on if I should go the Cadex route, Kraken. Or even Sheepdog. I have a feeling they both perform extremely well. I like the idea of having back up barrels. And I like the chassis system. But I also like the Sheepdog.

On the flip side I might prefer to have a custom rifle built by ATRS maybe? Anyone else do it and do a good job?
I’m thinking a high end action (open to suggestions). 24-26 inch heavy Krieger barrel. Sitting in either a AI AT, or a Mcmillan A10 stock.
Rifle will be 6.5CM. Maybe .260.
On top probably a Kahles 5-25x56.

I’m just looking for thoughts opinions and general intel here guys. If you could build a really high end rifle in the very near future in a he calibers I’m interested in what would you do? Also how backed up is ATRS... would I be waiting 6 months?

This rifle will be used for long range, possibly PRS in the future. And cranking coyotes in my back fields.

Budget is 5 - 12k

Help a brother out, let’s hear some ideas

If it matters, re-sale value on a custom built rig will always be much lower compared to a factory rifle, and Cadex makes some extremely great rifles.

Yeah I figured as much. I probably won’t sell it. But then, I say that every single time...

You and me both brother. Either way you will be happy with your rig, but the factory rifles do have better resale. Lots of custom rifles go for 50% of their build price on the EE.

That being said I'm getting a budget custom rifle built, but noone makes what I want in a factory rifle. Also it's nice to support good folk in the Canadian firearms industry with a custom build.

The choice between a high end "factory" rifle and custom probably really comes down to how specific you are with regards to what you want and whether that is offered in factory form.

I'd suggest giving the guys at Insite Arms a shout. Not only do they build absolute hammers but their build times are real fast as well and they have lots of high end components in stock (like Kriegers). They'll be able to walk you through a bunch of options based on your intended purposes. You can also get a few barrels done up at once and just spin on a new one when you burn one out (or want to change calibers) with a barrel vise, an action wrench and a torque wrench. I personally like Defiance actions (I have a Deviant Elite) but also run an American rifle company Nucleus. Insite are big on the Impact actions and that might be my next one, they're really slick.

Cadex makes some very very high quality stuff. I’m certain you won’t be disappointed, just be certain that it has all the features you want.

I have a Cadex and a Defiance in a Cadex chassis, so I am a bit of a fan.

But, to remain objective, I have buddies with custom actions set in the MPA chassis and I will say that it has certain advantages. You should take a good look at the MPA before committing to anything.

I think you should be clear on the goods and bads of each chassis system before focusing too much on the builder or even specific components.

What I like about the MPA is that it doesn't ring like a tuning fork. It's just solid and the recoil is dead. It's also easy to pull the action out. Cadex is a bit more involved.

If you go with Cadex, make sure no matter what that you get the folding stock.

You can always put a custom built barrelled action (700 platform) in a cadex chassis if you choose, It's tougher to go the other way if you decide you want a different chassis in the future and you've already bought the CADEX.

I definitely echo what's been said above... Call Insite if you decide to go custom as they will help walk you through the whole process and what works best for your needs.

I will be listing 2 sheepdog new cadex chassis builds in the next couple of days

Nice custom builds, just back operations force sale

call arts, I site and give them your requirements and see what they say

Cadex is nice, sheepdog gives up nothing on the more expensive cadex actions

Budget is 5 - 12k

Maybe a high end custom rifle will depreciate more than a high end factory rifle on the used market? It really depends on the specific rifle, and I wouldn't say its a hard and fast rule. If you are going to spend 5 - 12k buy something you are prepared to keep for a long time, because rifles in those price ranges don't move fast if at all on the used market if your goal is to recoup most of your investment. Unless they have some historical and/or military heritage, be prepared to take a big depreciation hit selling any expensive run of the mill precision rifle. That is my experience anyway.

I was in your possession about 4 years ago and I went with a custom build and got everything I wanted. I ended up getting Insite to build be a rifle chambered in 6.5X47 and I was extremely happy with it. Give Harley a call just be prepared to talk to him for an hr lol. Figure out what bullet you want to shoot first if you reload.

With that budget i would go custom. Decide exactly what you want and get a top quality shop like insite build it for you.

I would go with a custom build

I really like the Cadex chassis but I'm not crazy about their actions

If you do some market research the resale value of Cadex seem to be very poor

Give Insite Arms a call and go over your options. Spec out exactly what you want and you'll be very happy

Why go into a "high end" factory rifle considering the resale value? You know you're going to sell it. You'd be much better off going the custom build route in my opinion, learning the pros and cons of each component and upgrading as you go.
