Good day Gents,

I'm sure this topic has been discussed many times in many different forums but I'd like some input.

I currently have a semi custom Rem 700 in 260. It had been blueprinted with a Shilen #4. It's a fine rifle and very accurate but it isn't as refined as I'd like. The bolt is stiff and lacks the buttery bearing feeling I'd like to have. The receiver is a long action but in reality I'm never going to put 140gr VLDs down the pipe. I'll be using 130gr tsx for deer out to 300 max. Besides that some 120gr match grade for varmints. I think a short action would suffice.

I'd like to keep the receiver to around $1000 at most. I'd also like a 3 lug so I can have a 60' bolt throw.

This is strictly an everyday rifle out to 300, no F class going on here.

I've always loved feel of the lee enfield bolts. I found them silky smooth. I'm guessing not many would be good for a custom build or even finding a smith that could true the action?

I'd like to stray from the 700 unless the "clones" are of much higher quality.

Thanks for your input.

Just buy a Sako or Tikka T3. They come straight from the factory with all of the features you require and they shoot like lasers.

You'll be hard pressed to find a custom action for $1000 these days, if you already have a remington look at putting in a ptg bolt to smooth it out the way you want

Assume your receiver is new?

There are some basic steps your gunsmith can take to smooth it up but useage is your best friend.

I bet that Enfield has seen thousands of bolt cycles. When your actions has been used a bunch, it will smooth up quite a bit.

Some of the smoothest Rems I have played with came from the 70's and 80's with lots of user mileage...

Enjoy.

Jerry

PS or you can just buy a Tikka and call it done.

The cheapest three lug 60 degree bolt is a ruger american and they are super smooth and shoot very well out to 300 yards. Just go and buy one in a caliber you like, cheap fix. You could also buy an old remington 788 as they are 60 degree.
