Whats your favorite varmint caliber for coyotes? Im going to order a custom rifle, the works, trued action, heavy barrel, mcmillan A-5 stock, custom paint on everything. I shoot a Rem 700 heavy barrel in a 22-250 & Im very happy with it but I was looking for more reach,500-750yards without the fur damage from a high power. Any input would be great, thanks:ar15:

I'm thinking you might be looking for a 6mmBR. It should work for your goals and they are extremely accurate. Long barrel life is another plus.
I don't know how it is for hunting though. Plus you'll have to reload for it.

220 swift has maybe a bit more zip, but not really enough to notice a difference. 204 Ruger is too small on coyotes at those ranges,IMO.

There's some wildcats out there; 22-243, 22-6mm Rem, etc.

Maybe a Lazzeroni Warbird with 150 gr. solids? :D

I would stick to the 22-250 and get a faster twist, like a 1 in 7 and shoot 90gr vld bullets, you should be good for 1000 yards. You could always AI your 22-250 for a little more bite.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for all the advise so far guys, can someone give a few examples of the enhancements from AI in the 22-250&.243? Im leaning towards the .243& handload to be fur friendly but whats the diff between .243&6mmBR? So many questions, thanks again inadvanced

my two cents fast twist 22-250 I run a 22-250 1@14 twist shoot 52g match kings on the bags shoots great in field tough to hold steady enough on bypod to hit dogs at 600

I went to 6mmbr site and read some really great info on the 6mmbr. Sounds like something I need more feed back on. Anybody shoot coyotes with one and will a load that will dump a coyote at 600yrds explode the next one at 100yrds?, how does it compare to a .243 thanks again

do u think you can even shoot a coyote at 500-700yrds. to shoot those distances at the gun range is one thing but to pull your gun out range the animal and make a cold bore shot on somthing the size of a dog is another thing. but i guess there isnt enough 3 legged coyotes limping around

243 is a bit faster (maybe 100fps) but both use the same 6mm bullet. They are very comparable although the 6mmbr uses less powder and has less recoil then a 243 is is more accurate and almost as fast.

There really shouldn't be much hide damage as long as you use the right bullets at any range.

You'll be lucky really to take a yote over 200 yards. Lucky...

Hey fellas, for starters, I'm not into producing "3 legged coyotes". I am more than confident in my ability to take coyotes between 300-500y with my 22-250, shooting 52g ballistic tips going 3750fps. I have over 30 coyotes hanging in my shop that will back-up these results. Not every shot is at 500y but its far from a fairytale for some of us.I'm just looking for a caliber with more reach without the explosion. Thanks for replying nonetheless.

The only bullet I've found that doesn't do mega damage to hides is the 25gr,hornady in .17. 6br. with all bullets from 55 to 105 gr. and every 22 centerfire are some of the worst. The prob with 17 is not much left after 400yd. We are using 204 with the berger 40's and a 12 ga. Seems to be a compromise. The 204's cover the longer shots and I use the shogun near the 'rabbit'. Doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in pelts as of yet. Sold 14 on Christmas eve day for $300. Some had 4" guard hairs and were very prime pelts.

We have tried most cart/bullet combos and there is no magic bullet. What works at a distance sux close up. My opinion only, but we've taken over 400 yotes in the last 7 yr. They seem to be braver since the cold weather of the last 3 wk. We got 3 in an hr. over bait.(dead bull) In this particular yard the yotes have moved into the bales and walk around like they own the place. Going back tomorrow if the snow lets up. Good luck, Mark
