I hear the Gov't chose the Beretta Px4 Storm as the duty gun for Border Service Officers. Anyone have any experience with one of these...kind of fugly lookin....

They have a 4in barrel, so they're prohib. I don't think anyone here has one...but from what I've read on US forums they're great guns.

btw where did you hear that?

A close friend and fellow shooter was on the test/selection panel,a nd confirmed this to me today. Ugly as hell but light-years ahead of what they have now (harsh words ;) ).

He seems to think that it came down to $$$ as the Storm, Smith M&P and the HK 3000 (I believe - don't quote me) all passed the hot/cold/reliability tests about on par...

I had heard that $$$ was not an issue. The H&K (P2000) is the only one in the running that was considerably above the price range of the other 3. Anyone have any knowledge of the chosen sidearm. Have heard pros and cons including rumours of high rates of misfire?? Just what you need in a sidearm !!! Personally I would have thought the Smith M&P or the SIG Sig Pro P2022 would have been better. Especially the DAK trigger on the SIG!

F'Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. We all shot about 100 rounds each today.

The DAO trigger is far better in some peoples hands than others, the rotating bolt creates a stable shooting platform and is close to an HK USP in looks and feel. The DAO is a requirement.

Initial impressions were that it would take a few extra rounds to master the trigger and longer range shots. It doesnt feel like a PROHIB in te hand, robust and full sized.

CZCanuck - spell Beretta properly

had you skipped out today - you would have been able to shoot one for yourself :)

I don't think anyone is making longer barrels for it...

but Beretta is supposed to make a .45 version with a extended 4.5in barrel....

Good to see that Beretta did away with the stupid open slide concept
:onCrack:

Px4 is just an updated Cougar model; (unlike 90two) it has absolutely nothing to do with 92FS (- one of the most reliable as well as original semi-autos ever made)....

with any gov't entity, $$$$ is an issue - whether they say so or not...

And yes, it is very fugly (no matter who the beholder)!!! It is however, far ahead of harsh words as it applies to a use of force continuum...

Put a few thousand rounds thu one then come back and tell me you still feel that 92fs is a "stupid concept". Have you even shot one?

Yes I have. No offense to Mel Gibson fans, but Beretta 92FS has got to be one of the most poorly engineered 9mm guns ever made. Despite having an aluminum frame AND a cut-out slide, it weighs as much as or even more than some all-steel, full size pistols with solid slides (i.e. BHP and CZ-75). Also, despite being the bulkiest of modern 9mm pistols and having the longest barrel, its magazine capacity and accuracy are just average. And let's not forget Beretta having to re-engineer the locking block to prevent the slide from flying into the shooter's face.

In any case, I'm not saying that Beretta is not decent range gun – provided that it fits your hands, it’s reasonably fun to shoot. However, it's hardly an engineering marvel that you're trying to portray it as. And for the record I said that the open slide was a stupid concept, not the gun itself.

The PX4 Storm is the issued duty pistol. It shoots pretty well. The model issued is the DAO 9mm with magazine disconnect and trijicon sights ( when they get enough built). I haven't had a failure of any type yet but I've only got about 1500 rounds through it.
I tried contacting Beretta about a run with longer barrels but they won't deal with individuals. my local gun shop tried an order of 500 and Beretta still says "NO!"
I won't get to shoot it again for 4 months (except in a death/grievous bodily harm situation) but I am satisfied so far.

^CBSA ordered PX4 with DAO trigger which is NOT a target shooting setup I haven't shot one myself but I bet you'd like the gun more iif you tried SA/DA model. I have M&P and shot a Glock and Sig DAK and can't say I liked the latter two ;)

Well that alone shows how much you know about the engineering of 92FS; locking block has nothing to do with prevention or cause of slide brakage!

btw Beretta’s accuracy is far from average; in capable hands and right ammo 1.5” groups at 25yards are not impossible... I have a magazine with a review of Taurus PT99 .40 where the author (Gene Gangarosa, Jr.) claims he got a 1in @25yards group and included the pics to prove it.

The only average thing averaged about Beretta is the weight; 34.4oz with a magazine is not a lot for a metal gun (90two and Vertec are 2oz less). Sure CZ 75 with all the ugly lighting cuts on the dustcover and muzzle end of the slide weighs about the same, but SP-01 version weights 42oz; same as P226ST, most 1911’s and steel framed Beretta, well actually 92 Steel is 41oz…:)

Sorry I forgot...Beretta had to modify both the locking block AND the hammer pin head to get the gun working properly. My bad :D

I think its a toss up which is uglier, the PX4 or the "new" 90-Two...neither of which I'd care to own. I'll probably try a S&W M&P in the next year though...maybe. I'm still trying to warm up to plastic pistols.

While I still preffer traditinal 92FS I like the look of 90two. Looks a lot better in person.

EDIT: capp325 here are some advantages of the Berettas 92 design over the ‘regular’ tilt barrel system;

-Barrel cools down faster
-Needs less lubrication due to minimal slide to barrel contact --with most guns you have to lube sides and top of the chamber/barrel as well as the inside of the slide...
-Magazine is lined up with the chamber improves feeding.
-Less chance for Ejection problems due to a LOT less slide/barrel surface for the case to get caught by.
-In-line (non tilting) barrel improves accuracy
-Better clearance for case ejection -again less chance for FTE
-Open slide makes it easier to clear jams (which only happen with underloaded ammo)
