I see bc auctions has a tasco scope for sale-''customs seizure''-did someone buy a scope in the US and try to bring it across the border where it was seized?

most likely didn't declare the true value! I was at customs paying duty and they were checking a car. The owner didn't declare the true value and the customs found the receipts in the car. The fine....!00% of the value of the item.

Then you get flagged everytime you cross back into Canada. Definitely not worth it.

If the scope was seized by CBSA it would not have been seized for anything relating to US export laws...duh. Probably not declared and the importer did not want to pay the terms of release.

WRONG! CBSA IS responsible for enforcing international imports and exports.
Just because a person here doesn't think permits are required doesn't mean they are not. There are far more items that require export permits than many realize.

Is an export permit required to bring back a non-tactical scope? A leupold hunting scope with a duplex reticle as an example?

Yes they are issued by Commerce Dept for most scopes that are not used for LE or military, the LE and miltary are covered by Dept of State export permits.

Why some things are regulated I have no clue, just know some of what is regulated due to the volume of importations we do here.

I am suspecting that in the case of this Tasco scope, someone did not declare it hence lost it and because of the fines exceeeding the value walked away from it.

If you don't declare something, and they find it, you don't have the option to pay.

I learned this in college when crossing as a passenger in a car with a 30 packs of Miller in the trunk.

Took about 10 years for me to make it through a border crossing without getting getting the business.

Never again!

Being a good Newfoundlander did you ever make the trip to St. Pierre-Miquelon for the "specially priced" spirits there back in the day?
