Hi,

This is my first post here.

I was thinking to buy a ruger 10/22 to customize, but was wondering where to start? Do I buy a standard model, or can I build from the ground up?

Thanks:)

I was in the same position as you, I was going to buy the basic ruger and upgrade/customize it. Due to the rather limited availability of barrels in Canada I was going to order the Butler Creek barrel/stock combo. I eventually decided on just buying the Ruger 10/22T. It was like 50 bucks cheaper than buying the basic with the BC combo.

I cannot say what to entirely do but it all depends on what you plan on doing with it later down the road. If you are going to upgrade EVERYTHING then I would find a cheap used one. If you are going to just buy a new barrel and a maybe a stock buy the basic. No point on spending more money if you are going to replace the parts that make it cost more money.

That's near impossible on here to find a cheap 10/22. I've been watching searching for one. They usually go for almost new price or even more expensive then a new standard rifle. Some might have a few upgrades but still a used rifle is a used rifle.

I would say long range, and look cool.

Pic up one of the new low end models from a board sponsor like Frontier. Run 500-1,000 rounds through it to smooth it out and break it in.

Barrels can be found and shipped to Canada. RimfireSports, HawkTech, Guns and Goodies (google them, they are not board sponsors).

Many of the board sponsors do cary the Volquartzen line of upgrade products. Drop in hammer, extended mag release and modified bolt stop are manditory; under $100 combined.

Most places (in the US) say right on their page that they cannot ship barrels to Canada. If they do without the permits then they will probably wind up being up poopoo creek without a paddle.

If you want something that look (kinda) good and should have good distance and accuracy out of the box then look at the 10/22T.

They would love to sell us barrels but US regulations no longer allow it. I've bought lots of 10/22 parts through Hawktech and e-mailed them last week about a barrel. He responded that he is unable to sell to non-US customers due to the 'new' regs.....:(

Currently, very attractive pricing on 10/22T's at:

That is where I bought my 10/22T from.

If you want a custom gun, try looking in the exchange forums, there are a couple custom guys up there.

You are correct...but then, some of them may have permits too. Failing that, Questar (or any large smith, most of the board sponsors really) could import as a proxy.

Since I figure I'm just going to make a tacticool plinker with the FS556 kit, I bought the low end model. The internals can be changed later if I feel the need. I'll do the auto bolt release mod or sure.
