Cut back and re chamber almost new savage factory barrel?

Wondering if it's possible to cut back and re chamber a factory savage HB.

I bought a 10 twist 308 VLP to play with the heavier bullets but it turns out I have to seat @ 2.72" OAL to stay off the lands - kinda limiting once you step up to 175/185gr projectiles

a year ago I would have just used this as an excuse to order a new Shilen but the weak dollar and low round count on this tube make me wonder if I have other options.

Thoughts?

Why not just have the chamber throated for the longer bullets? No need to have it set back and rechambered.
