I seen many threads where people have cut down mosins yet no front sight option because normally the barrel is much fatter and no real simple option other then turn down the barrel or option that not available here ( brass stacker ) or use a solder on front sight ramp, or gun smith to cut a dovetail. All other military front sight bases I found where under .600, nothing around .650 that I needed.

Option I used other then gunsmith was to bore out a No4 front sight base ( No4 bayonet lugs are fatter then the barrel I was using, No1 wont work .550 ID) To the Dia I needed, I need .652 I had a friend bore it out to .650 and fine tuned from there ( emery cloth the barrel ) then drilled an tapped for a sew screw ( used this option being that I felt drilling a slot for the cross pin would be too deep into the barrel ) 40rds and hasn't shifted. Now If you wanted to, you could install the front sight guard, haven't notched out that yet ( almost like the fin mosins )

Wish I used the FSB that uses the screw to clamp the blade in. I found this was the cheapest and cleanest option. Mind you you need to play with the front sight height. Im sitting at 500M sights to hit 1" above at 50.

that's awesome man ...i have seen i think brass stacker makes a front sight that slips up the barrel but have not seen for sale in Canada....i too am workin on a mosin project, thought about maybe shortening the barrel but i don't want to get rid of the front sight...anyway good idea, i don't have a friend that can mill one out for me though hahaha,

ATI makes one that you can get around here but no windage option.

I literally just did that with an no4 sporter I cut down to 18.6" and crowned, reamed it out then pounded it on till it started to take an ovalish shape.
Its a pain drilling that sight pin hole on the barrel..snapped a few bits.
Yours looks great compared to my bush pig!

First one I did that mangled it and oval shaped it, second one I sent to a friend to bore it out. I added a setscrew only because I wasn't sure if I try to drill for the cross pin, I would drill into the lands. I only put 40rds thru it and the front sight base never moved.

I was thinking about cutting down a 91/30 and reworking the stock to replicate a M38 to keep me busy. As alluded to "Brass Stacker" wouldn't ship to Canada and getting a front sight on a shortened barrel has left me baffled. Has anyone thought of grinding the cut-off barrel section to get the front sight base off and brazing or welding it to the shorter barrel? I am sure there must be problems with doing this or someone would have done it.

Get the shortened barrel turned to accept the original front sight.
No. 4 front sight bases can be bored to fit as shown; they can also be bored and sleeved for a smaller barrel.

I cut the band in half, Sit in onto and tried to braise it. But my braising skills was not the best, Didn't look as clean as this.

What did you do with the Mosin front sight you cut off? I'm looking for one and can't seem to find any other than eBay, pm me if you still have it and would part with it.

I used for the first attempt to try and attach it to the barrel.

I'm testing this now, it's a trueshot av2 made for the mini 14/30, this can be made with 14x1lh threads. but let see how testing goes.
This has already been done with the older version of this sight on a 91/30 and worked great and it's also been done on a TOZ .308.

Whats the barrel dia at that length where cut?

on this 91/30 at 22 inches from closed bolt face the diameter is almost 5/8 .625 and only tapers to about .640 the length of the sight.
Assuming they are all the same, and using Loctite 620 one could carefully use a 1" belt sander to even out the diameter.
620 will fill gaps safely up to .015.
