Hey guys, I have a 26" krieger barrel varmit contour. Thinking about having it cut and recontoured to make it more hunting friendly, maybe even fluted depending on cost. Can any of you find gents comment on cost before I start calling around?

My first call probably be Tac Ord. They have done some bolt gun work for me a few years ago and where awesome. Any other ontario smith's that you would recommend? I have only ever used Casey and Roger(RIP) for smith work.

It's a very high quality barrel... Sell it and buy the contour/weight you want... I think it would be cheaper with possibly a better result.

Cutting and recrowning shouldn’t cost much, if you don’t have to Mail it.

Not sure about fluting though, it sounds pricey.
What about running it through a lathe?

Last barrel Casey cut for me was I think $125. Wondering how much more it is to change the barrel profile?
Not sure, but I think taking it down on a lathe will take a bit longer than cutting and crowning.

Are capable of removing the barrel yourself? Do you have go/ nogo gages?
What make and model gun?

OK, so cut and crown and recontour with round trip postage is going to cost over $300. Don't know if guntech was including removal and reinstallation of the barrel in his estimate.

Then there is always the risk of something going wrong with the recontouring. Probably not, but could happen. A Krieger shouldn't have residual stresses.

That seem reasonable compared to a new Krieger barrel in the contour I want.

Guntechs prices are pretty good.
To cut and crown takes about 30 minutes once the barrel is off.
Probably 2 to 3 hrs to recontour.

If you were to sell your current barrel , you’ll more than likely loose a couple hundred dollars.

Then you add in the extra cost of getting your new barrel installed.

You would probably save a couple hundred bucks + re doing your existing barrel and a bit of aggravation.

You are probably right. I should just sell the whole rifle and start from scratch, probably less head aches.
I Think it’s the Scotch in me but starting over is the way to go. I’ve cut some rifles and turned a barrel. But to cut that one would be just wrong IMO.

There is no warranty on a modified barrel .Turning barrels can be tricky especially button rifled .If it has value I would sell it and get the one you want because if it does decide to walk during the turning process it can quick change from rifle barrel to rebar pretty quick. Not to mention changes can occur in bore dimensions as well, again mainly with button rifled barrels.Don't get me wrong I have turned down dozens of barrel successfully but I have had some go south well .I use high speed steel tool bits as it introduces less stress than carbide mind you some of the new micro finish carbon might be good as well.If the barrel has no resale value than have atther .
As far as fluting goes ,lets put it this way if you flute one side of a barrel and take it out of the clamping fixture it would resemble a banana, maybe an exaggeration but curved .That is how much stress that is relieved with the flute ,mind you it does equal out when you do the other flutes.Again that barrel will not be as straight as it was before the fluting not to mention bore dimensions.
Factory barrel go thru multiple inspection as well as multiple heat treating process including cryo with some manufacturers so they weed out the culls, and it happen believe me.
