cutting a barrel

Now that is what I want, a small little rifle with more power than a 30-30, I'll probably put true-glow sights on mine I will never shoot over a 100yds any way... was it expenive to put the open sigths on? I really like the look of that rifle the only reason i bought this 96 was to try and sell it on CGN, but now that i have seen that pic I think I'll keep it. I would really like to know the fps with that short barrel

i picked up a shortened 7x57 for my son and used it myself for walking, the barrel is only 18", with factory rem 140 gr. shooting off 1 bag i managed 3 shots in 1.5" @ 100 paces,i reloaded some smaller 120gr. and 100 gr. for him and had the same results. oh and by the way i still haven't finished that thumbhole project yet but will send pics later this year. i have a 96 bubba'd and will turn it into a varmint rig yet, i'm thinking 22-250 or 220 swift.

I have one I cut down to 20" and it shoots very accurately at 300 yards. I think its compact enough, and not necessary that you cut it to the absolute minimum. I also shortened the butt end of the stock and replaced it with a rubber pad. Everyone I know that has shot the gun, likes it.
