Cutting and re crowning a barrel...

you can do it yourself with what you have on hand.

I recrowned a .243 with a brass round head screw and valve grinding compound. It was a considerable improvement.

I should add that results will vary depending on your handiness with tools and your level of OCD :)

I've done it to a few bolt action 30 cals and an SKS.

I used a hacksaw and and the Brownells facing kit for the rifles, excellent results

The SKS I used a brass screw with lapping compound. Went from a 3moa to a 1.5moa shooter.

Hacksaw to cut to length, square of paper towel or TP to plug bore, machinist file to square muzzle off, emery cloth to polish, round head brass bolt and fine valve grinding compound to cut crown, and fine wet/dry paper over the end of my thumb to finish.

Done it many times over the past 40+ years. Always satisfactory.

PS: be sure to clear bore of paper towel before firing. ;)

A round slot-head brass bolt and fine valve grinding compound is more than precise enough for hunting accuracy. Every barrel I have shortened and crowned doing so shot at least as well as the factory job, often considerably better.
