cutting down a old double

so there some cheap old double shotguns out there and i was thinking
about cutting the barrels back to 20" and making a pistol grip for it :D

kind of like this but with a longer barrel

No reason why not. I'd cut down the stock first to achieve the look you want and then measure out 26.25 and mark the barrel. At that point measure the barrel to ensure it's still over the 18 inch minimum and then cut it a touch longer and file it back to the 26.25. The extra .25 is there just so there's no doubt at all about the measurement if the question should ever come up.

Just taking a minute to measure my Baikal SxS that I use for cowboy action shooting I see that if I measure out for an 18..25 inch barrel length and hold the tape measure there and measure back to the back corner of my pistol grip I end up at 26.75 inch overall length. Again I like to add that touch so the 18.25 inch barrel isn't going to be mis-measured in a "bad lighting" moment. And at 26.75 you're a healthy .75 inch over the minimum.

Another thing to keep in mind is that with the shortened barrels you'll need to use two hands to #### the main springs. And the residual force will tend to hold the barrels up and you'll find that some extra work around the action is needed to allow them to droop enough to easily load the chambers. Otherwise you'll find that you end up poking the ends in but the shot shell rims foul the receiver. It's easy to fix this though. You just need to "open" the gun a little more and they fall in.

Other shotguns may change how this works out since they aren't all the same. But the project is certainly highly doable. Just realize that you're always going to be shooting from the hip after this is done. You tube is full of attempted lobotomies from folks holding up pistol grip shotguns and trying to aim them normally. It's pretty clear that they just aren't suitable for any sort of aimed use once the shoulder stock is cut off. At least not unless you want to hold it out at arm's length and shoot it one handed. At that point I'm not sure I want to be chambering anything in 12Ga for such fun and frolics. Maybe more like 20 Ga instead? Or even a .410 "long double pistol" shooting slugs?
 
I don't mean to disagree but

I would not cut the barrels down to the absolute minimum I always leave some, like an inch sometimes in case the muzzle gets dinged you will bee able to fix it without making a prohib. just my .02

yea 20" still gives me some room :D and using the hardened jaws on my vice to cut the barrels even (dont worry some wood blocks will be used im just uning the sind as a guide)

hmm a leather strap on the foregrip and it should be a cool gun

what im going to do is make a pistol grip im not going to cut the stock up to make it that way i can put the stock back on and use it for cowboy action when i start

well that should still be in regulation affter there cut as im going to keep the rib soldered on and if its a hollow rib im going to fill it in with jb weld or somthing like that so theres no hole in the mezzle other then the bores
 
Here is the one I did up a few years ago. Was an old double that had a broken stock and trigger guard that I was given by a family member.

Barrels measure 18.625" and overall length is 35 inches. I put some fibre optic sights on it that I had left over from a muzzle loader. Ground the radiused bases flat and drilled and tapped into the rib.

Takes down to a handy package, fits in a small backpack.

Havent tried any accuracy testing yet, adjusted sights so I can hit a large coffee tin at about 25 yards. Kicks like a mule using slugs (and they are expensive as well) thus the lack of extensive testing. If its not a mock charge the bear will be close enough that I don't need to worry about point of impact to much. In fact I may just adjust the sights for the forward trigger and the second will be at powderburn distance anyways.
 
what im going to use is a Thalnmann 125 witch can be had for around $200

shooting shot,slugs,buckshot should be good i may make more of my exotic shells

buck and ball,bolo,tri ball,double slug,Rhodesian Jungle (buckshot behind a load of smaller shot)
 
Ain't nothin' more useless than a shotgun with no stock. Surfclod's, on the other hand, when a recoil pad is put on...
"...the bear will be close enough that I don't need to worry about point of impact too much..." It won't matter anyway. You'll be busy getting mauled. Yogi can cover 100 yards in less than 6 seconds when he's in a hurry. And nothing will stop him in his tracks, except maybe a spine shot.

:bsFlag: a shotgun with no stock has its place hunting paper tragets or maybe even small game not to mention the cool look of it

infact im building a 12ga double pistol down the road that will look like the pic above built on a new reciver and new barrel set made to look like a sawed off but it would class as a pistol

Considering that cutting them down converts they to cylinder bore it's pretty much a moot point.

The Baikal I cut down to make into a coach gun for cowboy shooting was filed square in both axis' by eye. Test shooting big paper targets at just 5 yards showed that they came out nicely regulated enough for cowboy shooting. Or any shooting that involves a cylinder bore.

If the barrels were more stout I'd try some slugs. But as they are a little thin I just shoot the birdshot with it.
