This subject has probably been discussed over and over, but I can't seem to find a thread about that topic, thanks to the marvellous search function. So, feel free to redirect me and delete this thread if needed.

I'm planning to have my 6" 629-3 Smith&Wesson cut down to 4.25" (a few milimeters above the rectricted-prohib limit), to add a unique look to it, since it's not really useful for any kind of competition that I do, it's more like my 'fun gun'.

I can't remember which kind of barrel cutting is legal and which isn't (non-restricted to restricted, restricted to restricted, etc). So I was wondering if the operation I'm planning to do is legal or not.

Also, i was wondering how tough is it for a gunsmith to cut down a barrel and make it look factory produced (recrowned muzzle, relocated front sight, etc.), and what kind of of money I should be prepared to put down for this work (roughly, like in the 100$ range or 500 or 1000...)

Any info or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Keep it over the minimum, and it stays restricted. Go shorter and the barrel becomes a prohibited device. The CFC would like you to get the new barrel length verified, and let them know so that they will be able to maintain the100% accuracy of the registry. To cut and crown and reset the front sight is going to cost a bit. Hopefully someone can suggest a 'smith who could do a tidy job.

When rebarreling a revolver barrel, sometimes you can shorten it at the threaded end and just rethread and headspace. That way the factory crown and sight don't need to be altered.

contact Barry at bitsofpieces.com, he has shortened a M19 and a M29 for me to 106mm and was very reasonable in price and did a nice job
