Hi everyone, kind of a noob question I'm sure but bare with me..

I have a Stevens single shot 12 ga I just picked up, it's ancient, pretty sure it used to be a pirate gun at one point. Anyhow, I took about 2-3 full coils off the spring for the tang/barrel lock lever that allows you to crack open the barrel, and it is much easier to use and smoother now.

I didn't touch the one that allows you to #### the hammer back because I wanted to ask first here if it will ruin anything? I hate how hard it is to #### the hammer, I want to take a few coils off the spring so its easier to #### back..

I DON'T want it to mess with the operation of the trigger/make it a hair trigger, I don't want it to be unsafe aka; if I bump it or drop it cocked (not saying I keep it cocked) will the hammer fall, so I was wondering..

Should I cut a few coils off the hammer spring? Does this sound logical? I will do it the same way as I did the barrel lock one.. Cut 1/2 a coil, try it, repeat.

Thanks in advance,

Kodi

Is the hammer spring a coil spring? Regardless - don't mess with it unless you have a replacement in hand. A weaker spring might cause light primer strikes / misfires. Personally I wouldn't screw with it at all. If you have trouble cocking it try doing some exercises to strengthen your hands, or trade it for something that you can handle.

Yes, it's a coil spring.. That's how I'd cut the coils off it 1/2 coil at a time. I don't have trouble cocking it and don't remember saying I can't handle it. I said I want to make it easier to #### back, I often try to improve things I own.

Thanks for the info about light primer strikes/misfires.

Not only isn't this a good idea, it's a terrible idea. So your plan was to cut off 1/2 coil at a time until when? Until the gun won't fire reliably? I would hardly consider making the gun unreliable, as an improvement.

Try to smooth up the pivot surfaces before cutting the spring. Some light polishing in a few key areas can do a good amount of good. Look for mushroomed, worn, rough or otherwise not smooth parts in the pivot areas.

LOL - You said the hammer was too stiff for your liking and i was trying to help you. I wasn't implying that you have little-girly hands, but if you do then the advice I gave would still be relevant. :)

Thanks for the advice, I took some areas down a bit and it seemed to help!

Yes it was too stiff, sorry for jumping to conclusions. I ended up taking a bit off the coil/polishing the surfaces cause I got confidence after I found a place to buy the mainspring for 3$ brand new, it made it easier to #### back and still shoots as it should. Now the gun is sold.

Thanks,

Kodi

Did you tell the buyer that you messed with the springs??
