When I hold my vintage S&W New Model #3 sideways up to the light, I can see a fine gap between the cylinder and the barrel. Since this is my first revolver, I've nothing to compare it to. What sort of gap is within spec for original S&W New Model #3 44 Russians? Is the gap adjustable?

A gap is normal for any revolver. It's not readily adjustable though. Haven't a clue what the spec would be. You could try a net search.
