CZ 452 22lr Varmint "out of the box" with a newb shooter

I've been lurking the treads for months now trying to decide my first bolt action 22Lr. I've seen a few threads saying that the Savage with the accutrigger shoots fantastic "out of the box" so here is what the CZ can do "out of the box" with a newb shooter. This was my first target shooting, plinked at cans over 20 years ago with a 10/22. All I did before shooting the rifle was to clean and lube the bolt etc. Then ran several oiled patches through the barrel followed by 3 dry patches. The trigger was "as is" out of the box. A buddy of mine lent me a 3-9 scope which he had optically centered and off I went to the range. First thing.... couldn't get the scope to focus but since I had already spent my $40 range fee I decided to shoot. (found out later that my buddy failed to tell me that the scope will not focus at 25 yards, he thought I was going to a 50 yard range)

Here is the sighting in target I used



This is the first 4 shot group @ 25 yards using CCI mini mags



Second 4 or 5 shot group @ 25 yards using CCI mini mags



Third 4 shot group @ 25 yards using CCI mini Mags



And the best 4 shot group on the second target @ 25 yards using Winchester High Velocity 40 grain




Just imagine what this rifle could do with a good scope and an experienced shooter
 
Great shooting, they are a fabulous rifle. Bought my son one for his first .22 and he usually shoots it at 100 yards. The 452 IMO is the best gun for its price, it will last you a lifetime.
 
I recently got a 452 varmint from Guns N' Games in Alberta, and I am very happy with it too!

This was the first serious group I shot with it, and I pulled the top left shot a little bit which opened up the group considerably. I can't imagine a nicer little rifle for the price.
I love my little Marlin 60SS too, but accuracy wise it's nowhere near the CZ.

PS, KeithZ: I shoot with a 3-9 scope as well that was factory adjusted to be parallax free at something like 100 or 150 yards. On many scopes you can fine tune your parallax for a custom distance by unscrewing the objective lens outer ring and manually turning the lens to be parallax free at a shorter distance. Leupold offers this service at the custom shop on non-AO scopes, but in reality it's fairly simple to do yourself with a little patience. This will make the scope basically useless at long range, but it will be visually sharper and have no reticle shift at your new distance.

It's a handy little trick if you have a hunting scope laying around and you want to put it to use for rimfire target duty.
 
Nice shooting, i`m happy with my 452 varmint. Just changed the trigger spring and got a nice 1.5lb pull, some have a bit of creep mine didn`t, or get ahold of yodave and get his trigger kit. get yourself a good scope i like the ones with adjustable AO for rimfire.

Been reading alot about those trigger kits may just check it out
 
I recently bought a CZ 452 American southpaw version. Mounted a 4-12x40 Bushnell Trophy. After shooting it a couple of times, my 10-22 got moved to the back of the safe.
The CZ has a quality look and feel, excellent trigger, and the five round clip is saving me a fortune on ammo.

No mods, just a little Mobil1 5w30 in a couple places to slick things up.
I'm sure the Yodave kit would improve things, but I'm not terribly unhappy with the factory trigger so far.
 
Dude, thats some nice shootin
i really like my 452 varmint ... imagine that..a good shooter with decent wood... nothing turns me off like plastic pos stocks ugh
 
If you like to tinker, go to rimfire central and you can do some polishing of the bolt mechanism, cocking cam, firing pin and receiver, and make the bolt really smooth. I did that on my 452 and it really makes the bolt action nice.

I must admit I was a bit surprised how stiff the bolt was. I also learned very quickly what happens when you don't completly engage the magazine. Thats why most of those groups are on 4 rounds.... doh!

Don't go crazy with excessive lapping of the bolt into the receiver. You don't want to produce excessive wear. Just speed up the breaking in of the bolt to receiver. Some surfaces like the cocking cam area and firing pin you can make them like a mirror, and after grease and reinstall, they will feel a world better.
 
Update

OK, bought a Mueller 8-32x44 Side Focus and a Boyds thumbhole to help out with my arthritic thumb.

25 yards, 4 shots, CCI 22lr mini mag
When I saw the first 4 shots go through I sniveled out on shooting the 5th. Figured the chances of me doing this again were low. Didn't want to spoil it with a flyer.

No bedding etc just took some tension off the trigger spring and the stock screws were not torqued.... so pretty much out of the box.
Totally amazed at these CZ's..... next purchase.... 452 Varmint 17 HMR.
 
Nice shooting. If your wondering about the trigger kit GO FOR IT. Most of my shooting is done off hand and when I put the YoDave Trigger kit in my 455 it made a world of difference. Although the rules don’t allow it I could get the pull down to a hiccup and it would go off lightness. I also had some issues with light strikes and solved it with a heavier bolt spring. Dave lives 10 min from my house so I just went to his and picked up the kit. 45min later it was installed. Simple as pie and worth every nickel.
