Hello all,

After installing a scope on my first rimfire rifle I took it out for a test. Since I am new to the shooting "sport" I am trying to get solutions to some of the challenges. Last Sunday was a gorgeous day at the range, with temperature a bit over 0, wind steady at 15km/h, and sunny. I shot from a wobbly picnic type of table (that's what they have at the club) and with sandbags as rests. Did my best to keep the barrel on the target. The range was 50 yards and tried shooting when the flag was motionless. To get a more accurate result on consistency aspect I shot 2 groups of five shots each. I got some interesting results (mind you, as new shooter any result seems interesting:) ). I have attached pictures and I would kindly ask for your comments and suggestions.
The type of ammunition used is written on the target. One finding was that CCI ammunition was very difficult to load (I could barely close the action). On most of the targets I got the well-known "flyer". Now, this could very well be due to lack of experience or too much excitement. What is your experience on this one?

Rifle: CZ 452 Varmint
Scope: Weaver V10, 2-10x38mm Matte Black, Duplex
Rings: Millett

Many thanks in advance for your feedback.

Thanks DAR.
I cannot explain the "flyer". I am also disappointed with the ELEY performance. Anyway, it seems it really likes the Thunderbolts:eek:
I was not surprised with Lapua and PMC as I expected that performance (from other reviews). I also shot some high/hyper velocity ammo and will post the targets later. I have to figure out how to adjust the size of the pics (kinda annoying if too large).

Sweet rifle, and good shooting.:D
Things to try but your pretty on the money now;
-Another shooter to compare results
-calm day
-trigger work
-vary power settings on scope
-and 100 meter tests
Is the gun bedded, this often will produce excellent results, but must be done with care.Good luck

I'm going to buy a 452 American .22lr soon and top it with a Simmons 4-12x AO. Probably do a little Metalic Silhouette this summer and maybe do some informal bench rest. Really liked your groups. Not bad right out of the box. Don't worry about those fliers yet. Could be you,as you said. Keep on shooting and experimenting.Levi has some very good advice and maybe some mods will be warranted in the future.:)

I put an adjustable target sear and lightened spring from brownells in mine, highly recommended. Mine shoots an honest one hole for five rounds at 50 yards with Dynamit Nobel Subsonic HP's, and damn near one hole with CCI Velocitors. Velocitors only get better compared to the rest the farther out you go... I shoot to 200 frequently.

Daniel,
I adjusted the trigger to the minimum (take up travel) since that's the only adj. on this rifle. I think that a lighter trigger would improve the groups. I also think that 452 has a very short overtravel (maybe somebody with more experience can confirm that) wich I really like.

Yep, they are accurate. You will find CCI tight and a couple other
types of ammo tight as well in a CZ. You'll see why they first time
you got to clean it, very tight barrel.

Try some dynapoints, they seem to shoot really well out of allmost any thing. Solid rest is the main thing for good groups. Sand bags fore and an ear bag aft works best for most. 50 yds is the most common for rimfire. Your groups on a couple of targets are exceptionally good I think. The brooks trigger kit worked really well in my 452 american 22 and 17hmr. I have them both set at 1 1/2 lbs-----Cowboy

Here is the CCI Velocitor and Winchester Wildcat. To get a better group with high velocity ammo I think I need some work done. I will try bedding the action, free floating the barrel (although on a CZ I would call it pseudo-free floating, if you know what I mean) and a lighter trigger.

What do you think of the bedding methods describe on this site:

Dyna Point ! I knew I missed one.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

the trigger kit is definetly worth it over travel doesnt bother me but creep pisses me off the trigger kit also comes with some sleeves to reduce the creep and then you get a break like glass trigger and with no spring your down to .5 lb Ive got my trigger at 1.5 and it is wicked
for 15 bucks you cant beat it and it only took about 2 weeks to get here fron the time i mailed money order till it got here (the brownells stuff will set you back 77 us where as these are only 15)
and if you really want to pimp it up check out www.rifle-stocks.com im getting the wild cat for my cz

However, there is still a big difference between the brooks kit and the adjustable sear. The sear is micro adjustable for engagement and over travel by way of tiny allen screws. The sear engagement area is also cut far better, the CZ part looked really rough in side by side comparison.

velocitors

Don't worry if velocitors do not shoot well from it, they spray like shot out of my Varmint, had much better luck with federal hyper velocity stuff. Try yellow jackets as well, mine likes those too. You stated that CCI was hard to chamber, were those stingers? Stingers are not recommended as the chamber is not designed for the longer shell. Buy as many types of ammo as you can find and try them all, may take many trips to the range, oh well. Good Luck and good shooting.

for 15 bucks i would try the ebrooks kit I just took the cz out 15min ago to see if i could notice creep and none with the .016 tube and the weight is less than .5lbs beats the hell out of 70buck

Just depends what trigger quality you're after. The Brooks kit lightens it up well enough, but doesn't improve let off or over travel really. Some folks are happy with a $15 solution, while others like to play a different ball game. You'll be happy with the Brooks kit for sure and I thought long and hard about which route to go personally, deciding on the adjustable sear eventually as it's a "once you try one" kinda deal.

DuDu, very nice rifle and you shoot very nice group. I have several small tips for you. Scope should mount as forward as positble, so that when you pull the trigger and the gun fire, you won't feel the scope will punch your eye and affect the follow though. And try use some sight in target, you will tell the different.
