Just wondering if anyone has any experience with both of these and could weigh in as to which would be a better buy or has any other suggestions. I'm looking for a left handed bolt action in .22lr with iron sights. I would like to mount a scope on it later but This will be my first firearm purchase and I would like to buy something fairly accurate and reliable, that I can keep for a long time. Not really interested in constantly upgrading, I would rather pay a bit more than less. Thanks for any and all input.

Cheers.

I have both, albeit in right-handed version. Both are solid, reliable, accurate guns. The MarkII has the accutrigger, the 425 can be fitted with a Brooks type trigger kit. The barrel lengh on the Lux is 28" vs. 20 on the Mark II. Might be a factor in the field, not an issue off the bench.

With Lapua Super Club ammo, the Lux would group .4" off the bench, but the Mark II was no slouch either, about .5"

Mags for the Lux are much nicer, machined or molded plastic, vs stamped steel.

Fit and finish on the Lux are superior, but the cut of the European-style field stock makes mounting a scope impractical. Also, the Lux (unlike the American, Varmint and Style/Silhouette) uses a 11mm rail....not quite 3/8" tip off. You can buy 11mm to Weaver adapter bases, I did and they work great.

The iron sites on the Lux are better, a machined tangent rear instead of a "buck horn and slider" on the Mark II.

If you are considering keeping it iron sites only, go with the Lux. But for the price of a Lux, you can buy a Mark II, a decent 3-9x40AO scope and still have money left over for a couple of bricks of ammo.

Thanks for the informative response. Sounds like the Savage is the way to go for now. I plan on using it only at the range, won't be hunting with it. It will be my first firearm so I just want to get good at shooting with iron sights and then pick up a scope for it later on.

Scope mounting on the Lux is tricky but do able, is that what I'm understanding? Lapua is premium ammo, correct?

Where should I look for aftermarket stuff for the Savage? Mags and such?

Cheers.

Yep, I have mounted several scopes on a Lux, couple of things to watch for:

1. the odd rail size. Its European, not American standard "tip off.". BLK makes mounts (one piece, two piece and weaver adapters bases)

2. the rear site bridge on a Lux is sweated to the barrel and cannot be easily removed. So you'll need to to use high or very high mounts, coupled with medium or high bases and a scope with a long space between the ocular and objective bells. Extra high Burris Sig QR rings, BLK weaver bases will allow you to mount a 6x18x42 scope. Larger front objectives 44, 50, 56mm front bells might be problematic.

Yes, and mine loves it. Also likes 1st generation Dynapoints, haven't tried them lately.

Any of the vendors at the top of this page would have aftermarket parts for the Savage Mrk II line.
