Finally got my PAL today, and immediately ordered a CZ 457 American.

As an absolute firearms noob, I'm wondering what types of ammo people have found the 457 shoots well?

Depends on what you are doing with it. Plinking, casual target, precision target, shooting gophers? I have a whole bunch of 455's and 457's, and use them 99% of the time for gophers, so I use whatever is closest to my reach, all hollow point. I can't ever recall using anything else. I bought a bunch of the Federal "Target" ammo a few years ago, and it was polluted with duds, lots of duds.

Good point.

Currently, I'm looking at just target shooting, non-competitive. Just learning how to shoot, how to use a scope, etc

CCI Std. Velocity. Very accurate, reasonable price; it will shoot better than you can. Get as good as you can with it, then start trying others. Tac22 is ok too, but last lots I bought were not as good as the first ones.

I agree with the CCI-SV for 'casual shooting' and it's pretty accurate for the price. When you're ready to move to more accuracy I'd go with the SK 'flavours' as suggested, depending on your use. SK-magazine is a bit cheaper than SK+ and almost as good, but you're around $10+ a box for Magazine and more for others. I've read that Eley doesn't shoot well in CZs until you get to 'Match grades' but I can do OK with Club and even Sport. Not as good as SK-Rifle Match in my 457-VMTR or 455, but your rifle might like them better. YMMV
PS - Re a scope I know you've been 'shopping' but I hope you've found something with at least 24X. othewise, you'll be disappointed soon and want to upgrade.

Start with SK long range match and SK rifle match

post results and things can move from there.

Bedding may be generous in your rifle (????). Having the action properly fitted to the stock will go a long ways to ensuring consistent results...

my 457 like SK the most. for a more budget friendly ammo i use norma tac 22, shoots very good. cci sv is ok but norma in the budget catagory is better in my rifle (sub moa)

Any recommendations for jags that work best?

Standard jags will be fine. The actual issue is that the ejector post will interfere with a .22 cal cleaning rod, so you can either use a smaller diameter rod or (what I do) is remove the stock and take out the bolt guide plate (the ejector is built into this part). It's a bit of a pain to take the rifle out of the stock, remove the bolt guide plate, put it back in the stock for cleaning, then take it out again to re-install the bolt guide plate, and finally put it all back together again, but I prefer that to the ejector rubbing on the cleaning rod and possibly pushing it over to contact the rifling.

Winchester Hollow point works best for me. Has more pop than Federal HP. Dispatches gophers similar to Stingers. No duds yet.

Lapua Center-X, Eley Match or Tenex, Sk RM or LRM, R50 <-- one of those will shoot lights out for sure. Center-X has been my go-to across multiple rifles.

As has been posted - to 50 yards (or even 100) and just learning you will be happy enough with CCI SV for the price point. Once you are comfortable shooting the rifle move up to SK or Eley which should tighten up your groups.

Bought a 457 synthetic last year. Put many rounds through it from many manufacturers and types. This however means very little since every gun has its own idiosyncrasies.
