Would anyone know the weight difference between the 20.5" American/Sporter barrel and the 20.5" Varmint barrel? I'm mulling over putting a Varmint barrel on my Synthetic, and am curious how much extra weight it would put on.

Before you mull too deep into the whole weight difference and change over , make sure the varmint barrel will fit your synthetic stock !

Definitely a good question to consider. I had checked that out earlier and it indeed fits (as per the CZ website). In fact CZ makes a Synthetic Varmint from factory now, but I haven't seen one in Canada yet. My guess is that it will be a pound or so different, but that's just a guess

I did exactly that - I bought the synthetic but the hogged out stock and the skinny barrel it came with looked silly - I bought the 24 inch varmint barrel - works like a charm but I suspect you are talking about the shorter and much heavier and thicker bull barrel? That might require a wee bit of grinding

Wait, the 24" varmint barrel is not just a longer version of the 20" bull barrel that comes stock on the 457 Varmint model? I'm pretty new to this whole CZ thing, so I was under the impression that the 16.5", 20.5", and 24" varmint barrels were all just varying in length, not circumference. If it is narrower, that could be an option for me.

Regardless, I assume the 20" bull barrel should fit fine in the synthetic stock, since that is what the CZ website is advertising now (they say the synthetic stock will handle any barrel without configuration)

There is a chat function and a contact form for tech support at the CZUB web site. They will answer all questions.

Thanks for the heads up. I sent them off an email and hopefully will get a reply back soon. It would be nice to know the differences between the 24" and 20" varmint barrels, particularly about diameter and weight

i just put a MTR barrel on a 457 synthetic and its quite a bit heavier. how much, not sure but, its very noticable. probably almost double the weight? must say though it was worth it! tightened my groups up a lot! if thats your thing...

Oh boy, nearly double the weight? That's quite a bit of added weight... It is my hunting rig, so that is a bit off putting

If your using it for hunting, IMO, as a guy who's owned 8 different 457's, is stick to the pencil barrel. The bull barrels are significantly heavier than pencil, at least twice I would say. There is no way your going to get either of them too hot, they are bolt guns. If your hunting and not shooting paper, the accuracy difference will not be noticeable. If your walking much at all, you will quickly hate the bull barrels. FYI, diameter on the 16, 20 and 24 varmint/bull/MTR barrels are exactly the same.

Not knowing where you found a 20.5" bbl, I checked with the CZ site.

CZ457 Varmint 22 BLL 20" heavy barrel . . . 3.3 KG

American 24" BBL . . . 3.0 KG

This is essentially comparing Apples to Oranges.

Without being more specific about the models we are all just guessing.

CZ Europe shows a 20" bull barrel at 2.9kg, and a 20" pencil at 2.5kg, so about .9 of a lb heavier in the barrel, both synthetic stocked.

The CZUB website shows that the barrel length of their Varmint barrels as 525mm's, or 20.6". They refer to it either as a 20.5" or 20" barrel, much the same as the 24" barrel is technically closer to 24.8". Not that important in the end.
