Just shopping around on line and coming across a few CZ varmint heavy barrelled guns in 16 and 20 inch.
I once owned a browning BBR 22-250 with a heavy bull barrel and i could not free hand with it ,so i sold it .
So my question . Can you free hand a cz 457 varmint fairly well for hunting use .

Only you can judge your strength.

The CZ is substantially lighter than the BBR and it balances very well. I've got a 457 chambered for the 22 wmr with a standard weight bbl.

I also had the 457 with the Varmint bbl, but sold it. I couldn't see any useful difference in accuracy between the two, other than on paper and even that seemed to depend on ammo available at the time.

I sold the Varmint barrel rifle, because it wasn't getting any use, because of ease of carry in the field and I needed the Leupold scope it was wearing for another rifle at the time.

My CZ rifles were for utilitarian purposes, and I like them a lot, but now I'm down to one, as I've switched to the Tikka T1X for 22rf shooting and a Gevarm and a 1903 Win semi auto, painstakingly converted to 22rf, for my plinking demands.

It is a bit heavy.
My solution, an idea stolen from a friend for all day gopher shootin'...
A $30 amazon tripod and a bean bag.

I hunt hares and the occasional grouse with a heavy barrel Marlin xt-22, I don’t find it bad to carry or shoot offhand. I use a sling to get set up securely for longer shots if I need to take them, or I use a tree branch or some improvised rest if I have the time/luxury.

I has a synthetic stock so weight is reasonable, I’m sure it would be heavier in a wood stock set.

Unicorns? Maybe for you RH folks. Just picked up a 457 Varmint with a 20" heavy barrel (aren't all the Varmints heavy barrel though?) in LH that's chambered in 22LR a couple of weeks ago. They didn't have any RH ones left so I guess those are the unicorns? But they don't have any LH ones left now either, so...
Being a lefty was finally an advantage! lol

I had been looking at the American but decided the Varmint had a better feel/fit for me. It's a bit heavier (not quite a pound) but feels much more solid in my hands. As noted above, a tree or rock can assist if needed, or a set of sticks, but the extra weight is not for everybody if you're shooting completely free hand, so you'd have to judge that yourself.
