Cz 457 or ruger American?

Had them both. No to the Ruger. CZ shoots right out of the box. The Ruger sounded like a zipper when the bolt was cycled. Had 2 of them , one was only good for a tomato stake

Gotta consider what you call "Plinking accuracy". Beer cans or golf balls. I selected the CZ457 V-MTR and am getting ca 1" group of 5 @ 100yds. My Sav B22-FV gets ca 1.5-2" at 100. Both are 21" V-barrels.

I've owned 4 Ruger American rimfires, and 11 CZ 457's. Have 4 CZ's currently. Of the Ruger's, 2 were blued, 2 were stainless. I found both stainless to have a nicer fit and finish than the blued. Pro's for the Ruger are its magazines. Very reliable flush mount 10 rounders. The CZ also has reliable magazines, but are single stack and anything over 5 protrudes significantly. The fit and finish on the CZ's is better, but not jaw dropping better. The CZ is very modular and that is one of its greatest attributes IMO. If you are buying said rifle to use for varmint shooting only, rough use, the Ruger might be what your looking for. For frequent or even casual bench/target use in addition to hunting, CZ would be my recommendation.

I think if accuracy and build quality are priorities, I'd pick the CZ. If it's going to rattle around on an ATV and possibly left in the rain, pick the Ruger. Not being funny, anyone can see the value in a rifle you can just use and not baby. Especially when they're @ a good price.

This is a good assessment. Like many calibers, I have a performance firearm and then I have a beater/plinking one, the latter of which gets fed the standard range ammo. I used to think once I got my CZ457, I would never bring that old Savage .22 out of my safe again. But it comes in handy sometimes for just plain old target shooting/plinking with average ammo in not the most ideal conditions. The 457 is an amazing rifle, super smooth bolt travel and throw and accuracy out of the box is superb.

CZ457 are very nice. Had both brands, Ruger knows what it is doing and in general shoots good, but when it comes to their quality CZ rimfire firearms tends to be better in quality and it tends to shoots very good. So it depends on what you want to do, and how much care you want to put in the firearm, CZ usually have wood stock and blued barrel, Ruger often use more weather resistant materials. General plinking with cheap ammo, and not willing to take good care of it, I think Ruger might be a good choice. If you want a nice, more traditional firearm with high accuracy, CZ457 is probably the firearm for you.

I have a cz 452. A tikka t1x. And a ruger american. If you sit down at the bench with 10 different kinds of hi volocity ammo including cheap bulk hp, the cz is king and its not even close. Then the tikka. Then the American. Now granted this is a small sample size and I gotta say I was expecting better of the tikka but those are my results.

The tikka does shoot it just doesn't like some of the cheap hp. The cz just shoots small groups with everything. The American shows similar traits accuracy wise as the tikka, but a little bigger groups.

I can’t really find much wrong with my CZ. I’ve handled the Ruger and it seemed quite nice too - not attention paid to fit and finish I think. But CZ has a decent reputation for accuracy.

After shooting them both today, hands down the CZ. The bolt action, the trigger, and the accuracy were all MUCH better with the CZ, as well as the personal feel of the stocks between the two models I shot. CZ 457 Varmint and Ruger American Target.

I just picked up a ruger ranch rimfire from al flaherty on sale for under $500, for that price the CZ is not twice as good for twice the price

Just got it yesterday have not shot it but the trigger is excellent not a mm of creep and a break at 3lbs, The bolt has the standard zipper noise but I disassembled the bolt and spent a bit of time with flitz and polished it up and it removed 85% of the zipp

Overall for $460+tax and free shipping it was a deal I just couldn't pass on, I picked up the 17 hmr but they also have the 22 lr on sale too so either for under $500 shipped is excellent deal even if it isn't the best in class, Plus with the 17 hmr you get 15 round magazine or 9 round flush fit rotary mags if you get the 22 lr you just use 10/22 mags

There's always the 16" CZ457 with synthetic stock. Best of both worlds.
