CZ 457 The Rimfire Worlds Darling

The author of the CZ piece is Michael Shea, the same author of the new and just-released book, Rimfire Revolution. The article, which appeared first by a few months, is abridged from the CZ section of the book.

Curiously, in both the article and book Shea repeats the same mistake in referring to the Brno 3 as the target-specific model (it's the venerable Brno 4). Also in both the article and book, Shea claims "Half-inch groups at 50 yards (or very close to it) should be expected from the entire CZ 457 lineup with a factory barrel and match ammo." CZ guarantees 1 MOA results (half-an-inch at 50 yards) with the match chambered 457 models only -- the MTR and LRP models. Shea seems unaware that there is a CZ match chamber.

A short time ago I had a few CZ457's that I called darling...until the first time I cheated on them with a Tikka T1X.

^I've yet to shoot a 457, but hope to someday. Very pretty guns for sure, allot to like. I'm still in the honeymoon stage with my T1x, never thought I'd like it this much. It's the 22 I reach for every time. Which hasn't been much lately-it's groundhog season. :)

CZ 457 or Tikka T1X is a good debate with regard to which shoots better. In his book, Shea recommends the Tikka over a similarly priced CZ, unless someone is willing to "tinker".

More than likely, the better shooter would be based on the luck of the draw with the question of which will have a better barrel. Otherwise, the barreled actions will be a good bet to shoot very similarly.

At $50 more, the CZ 457 MTR is very close in price to the Tikka (which seems to me to have gone up in price more than CZs in the last two years). In my opinion, without any tinkering the differences in stocks makes it hard to choose the Tikka.

^Seeing that on other makes/models as well. I bought a Ruger a couple of years ago that listed (new) for $740. That gun is nearly $200 more today. I'm no economist, but I haven't read a believable explanation as to why.

Edit-I'm not a Ruger guy but liked the gun and wish I hadn't sold it. Only watching prices on new ones because I was considering adding another some day. Not happening at the new price though.

Agree, except finding good quality 1" 11mm dovetail medium rings IN STOCK anywhere for a 457 is akin to finding out what is in the supposed secret file the government purports to have as the basis of the OIC.

Warne 11mm (reversible) are excellent on my cz. Commonly in stock.

That said, I’m not in love with my 457. The bolt is not that easy to manipulate and the trigger is meh. It’s nothing special.

Got a CZ 457 Varmint, Burris rings, Zeiss scope, Harris BR-S that I use off of a portable table a lot. Perfect size, weight, balance, love the 60 degree bolt and trigger is great once adjusted. Feels and looks great and shoots very well. Functions perfectly never a hic-up. One of my "never sell" guns. Tried buddy`s Tikka T1X, barrel was too light, trigger not bad but found CZ better, action not as nice and just looked and felt like a Mattel toy instead of a real gun, also $120 ( plus tax) more. Tikka just did not feel right too me, shoots okay but I much preferred the CZ. Just my humble opinion, both are fine guns.

I purchased the tikka a month back when they were on sale, I put it in my tikka t3x varmint stock I wasn't using and cleaned the gun, then put a scope on.next day went to range and put 4 aotomatch through it to zero scope, next I put 5x5 sk rm on target for the 1/2" challenge it succeeded then tried it with centre x and again succeeded.that was its first 54 shot from box.the target picture is up on the challenge page but couldn't download the particulars.and I'm not a good shooter.

Luv MTR's

Got a 457 MTR 17 HMR a couple years ago liked it so much that I sold
2 x 455's and 1 x 452 to buy an MTR in .22 lr.

The Tikka is smooth , but I luv my MTR's.

I'm a tinkerer, I like the CZ platform for building off of. Can't say I've been impressed with their factory barrels, but it's easy to fit them up with a custom tube. I can see myself doing a 457 build in the future.

Don't get me wrong i actually wanted the cz mtr but cost of shipping and all it was 500 more or something like that and knowing an anschutz was coming my way, well I got the tikka.the 457 mtr is far nicer lookin then tx1.but I have never had a 22lr out of the box do what this did.maybe I got one that the boys and girls messed with during lunch break,so it got broken in.
