Looking for a reasonably priced heavy barrel .223 bolt action for my dear wife. We groped a CZ the other day, and the stock is one of the few that is very close to fitting my darling's 5'4" frame, and the rest of the rifle seemed very nicely finished for the $900 price point.

Does anyone here own one? How do you like it?

Cheers,

Neal

I owned a thin-barrelled version for a few years that has since been sold. Here are my observations on the rifle.

On the plus side, it was reliable, light, accurate and a size propotional to the cartridge. It was an excellent walking around varmint rifle. Mine also have a very pretty walnut stock.

There were things I didn't like. The magazine lips were razor sharp and scored brass to the point where I didn't feel comfortable reloading it so I had a gunsmith smooth them. I could never get the adjustable single-set trigger right. If the unset pull was acceptable then the set pressure was too light. When the set pull was right the unset was too heavy. Eventually I just adjusted the unset pull the way I wanted it and forgot about the set trigger.

What ultimately caused me to sell this rifle was the safety. The safety had to be pushed forward to be made safe and pulled back to fire, the opposite of every other rifle I've owned. I know that some owners treat the CZ safety like a hammer that needs cocking but having grown accustomed to pushing a safety forward to fire I didn't want a rifle that worked in the opposite manner.

i have 2 czs, one in 221FB, standard bbl american. the other is a varment in 204.
i love em both. they are very accurate, and really like the 221.
i agree on the saftey, not so good. i simply never use it, never chambre a round, untill its time. havent had a prob with the mag lipps.
i also agree on the set trigger, never could get em quiet right. i did the same as claybuster, simply set up the trigger, and forget about the set.

I had a CZ 527 Varmint Kevlar. It was a good rifle. Accuracy was good but it did damage casings. I had to throw out a couple because the case was so severely dented by the magazine feed lips that the case looked like a person took a knife to it and cut it. Otherwise it was a good rifle - I sold mine to fund other projects... Do I regret selling it? Not really.
