So I am planning on getting a higher quality, "long term" hunting rifle after hunting several years with (yes I know... here's your warning) a Remington 710 in .270. At the time I was not in a financial position to spend much money but wanted to get started so I picked up the 710 used from a friend for under $300 with a scope. I bought it as a platform to learn on as an introduction to shooting and hunting and despite the absolutely terrible sloppy and sticky action it is a surprisingly accurate rifle. It has served me well and I will keep it to use as an emergency backup and as a rifle to introduce my future children to firearms and hunting.

Anyhow I have looked around and really wanted the Sako 85 Bavarian in either 7mm RM, or .270 Win as I am a huge fan of the European style walnut stock with the raised cheekpiece. But over time I've come to realize the price tag while affordable, the money could be spent more effectively on good quality optics for one. I have narrowed it down to the CZ 550 Lux in 8x57IS or .270 Win, or the CZ550 Medium Lux in 7mm RM. I am leaning towards the 8x57IS. Just wondering what your experiences are with CZ rifles and this round?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Cheers,
Andreas

They are fine rifles, but unless you reload, you will find 8mm Mauser selection limited and of low power. When loaded to its full and proper potential, however, you are in the same range as 30-06 or 308 power -- more than adequate for any game here. Personally, I love 8mm Mauser... a very classy hunting calibre. If you don't reload, go for 270.

I like the 8x57IS as loaded in Europe, the American loadings are like "managed recoil" or practise rounds or for smallish big game in comparison. If you have access to a good gunshop that stocks Norma or RWS you will have the best ammo for a very good cartridge. Other european companies like PPU, Igman, S&B make standard quality ammo at an affordable price. Reloading with CIP specified data rather than SAAMI data will bring out the best in the cartridge.
If you like the CZ rifle, and it fits you, you will not be dissappointed with your choice. Both rifle and cartridge are very versatile, and high quality in my opinion.

Thanks for the comments so far everyone! I like the idea of hunting with an 8mm Mauser! Anyone else have a thought?
