When I was first entertaining the thought of a CZ Varmint Laminate in 22 250, I did some basic searches here and there for reviews etc. I found very little.
On this forum I found very little as well, it seemed very few people actually owned one, but a few had them shortlisted as possible rifles they would like to purchase. With a lack of feedback and reviews, I put my faith in the few reviews I did find, and the first hand experience of 2 people who had them, neither of which was in Canada.
Nothing more than an oppinion here at the .02 cents.
From the moment I saw the rifle, I was interested.
Heavy Barrel, Green Laminate, good fit, set trigger, detatchable mag/clip,...
I have had the rifle about 6 months or so, and cannot say enough about it.
It's relatively heavy, about 12 lbs and well proportioned. So much so that you can occasionally see a hit through the scope.
I am not a reloader, so the first bullets I chose were the cheap 45 grain hollow point winchesters (white box). The rifle is indeed a hunting rifle, and I am not a bench shooter except for sighting in and ensuring zero and when I switch cartridge brand bullet types etc. It's mounted with a Bushnell 3200 5-15x Tactical Scope and pivoting bipod, can't remember who makes the pod, but it was somewhere around 100-130$, it was a while ago.
My first shot was high to the left on paper. I did my best to approximate the inches and dialed in with the turrets. Next shot was a bulls eye, but high right. two clicks and I was on centre, three more clicks and I was .7 -.8 high and centre. Right where I wanted to be.
I then started in on a few groups. Sub MOA first 5 shot, sub MOA second 5 shot group. I was quite happy. I had one cartridge require a little more force than the others to close the bolt. It came out as a fliyer, 5 inches high and about 3 inches to the left. Worried I put in another round, and bingo, .7 inches high and centre.
Yesterday afternoon, and in 15 km/hr wind I setup some improv targets in a gravel pit (wind seemed less there). A coke bottle, (plastic) a KFC large pepsi cup with frozen pepsi in it, and a small round tupperware container,
At 250 yrds I fired 9 rounds, and sadly, only the pop bottle fell over.
Then I went over to check the bottle out, a bit dissapointed and deflated.
Imagine my surprise. all bullets were good hits, with all groups within 4 inches. Not bad off the hood of the truck. I don't know why none of them moved or fell over, but that's what happened.
A strange thing I noticed with the tupperware container was that the holes seemed so small. It seemed smaller than pellet gun holes. The KFC cup looked the same, with a little bit bigger entry, but the entire back side of the cup was just about gone, and lead was spread throughout the ice. The coke bottle had holes about as big as my wedding ring comming out the back.
I did not hold over nor use the turrets for the shots. Being the distance they were and 5-15x scope, it appeared I was hitting where I was aiming, whatever the drop was, it seemed negligible, perhaps it was at a 250 yrds zero with the .8 or .9 high.
My final shot was on a magpie at 327 yards. Magpie on inpact resembles a feather pillow exploding.
While this is not your typical range report, this my practical report. I wish I had come accross a few more when I was looking for them.
