CZ 557 in 30-06

I have the CZ557 in .308. The carbine version with the open sights. It is a tack driver. Good, solid rifle with some European flare. A little hefty, lots of metal. Great workmanship, For the price it can't be beat. Amazing value.

I have two, a Sporter in .308, and a Lux in .270, both are incredibly accurate out of the box. The only things I did to them was change out the Euro style sling swivels with QD studs, sealed the barrel channels with spar varnish and adjusted the factory triggers using the instructions in the manual. Very nice rifles overall, well built and solid. I would prefer 22” barrels rather than the 20.5”, but that does make them easier to carry. The integral scope mounts are nice, and I’ve gut Burris rings on one and Leupolds on the other. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one in .30-06.

I picked up a cz557 eclipse in 3006 for a friend for dirt cheap. He is a novice centrefire shooter (has shot rimfire and clays) and we went to zero his scope and try a few types of ammo. Winchester super X 150gr and federal blue box 150 GR printed 9x 3rd 1in groups (going by the squares on the target, didn't have a ruler, may have been some 1.2 in groups in there). The Federals were printing maybe 1 in right of the winchester. There were no flyers or outliers.

Pretty impressed with it right out of the box with cheap ammo and a new shooter (though he didn't start out with bad habits). He bought some Sako ammo which we will try next time out.

Had the 308 Carbine as well, I know its not the 30-06 but same action. Slick feeder. Good trigger. Its a substantial rifle with a good pad so comfy to shoot.

Sold it but mostly because I didn't like the ringmount setup and the bolt knob tended to say hi to my trigger finger a lot when shooting it lol. Great gun though.

Can you elaborate on the swivel stud change? Both my 557 Lux and Lux 2 have 1 inch swivels.

And to add to your comments, these are exceptional rifles and the proprietary integral scope mounts, which have remained unchanged since 1949 (Brno 21/22) are excellent and well thought-out. I am a big fan Warnes QD rings.
Both my rifles are 8x57, but 30-06 would be an excellent choice.

Kurgan, I took off the factory sling swivels and installed Uncle Mikes QD studs. Did yours have the stud, or the sling swivel on your rifles, as I have seen pictures with both. I found the edges on the factory swivels had sharp edges, and would probably cut into 1 1/4” leather slings I have. I also like to use a bipod in the field, but haven’t shot either of these rifles with one yet. The sporter stock was no problem, but the fore-end on the Lux is very thin, so the stud had to be ground down so that it would not protrude above the barrel channel and rub against the barrel. They are both very comfortable rifles to shoot, but I think I prefer the straight comb of the Sporter, over the hogs-back and cheek piece of the Lux.

I don't own one but I have a decent amount of experience with Cz rifles. They all feel of great quality. All have been supremely accurate given what they are. The only one with a defect was mine (sigh) which had a burr and made it so the mini-mauser action wasn't always cocking the rifle when cycled slowly. The gunsmith that fixed it had never seen or heard of an issue like that on a Cz, so mine must have been a really, really rare issue. Neither him nor any of my smith buddies even thought it was possible to have that issue. I doubt it would happen to you.

Overall, I really recommend the brand. Probably the best mainstream brand out there for bolt/hunting guns.

I have 3 cz557 rifles including the wooden stock carbine in 30-06. All are decent well made rifles. Much better than most current rifles out there. Also have a 550 - much nicer rifle- Mauser action with a set trigger but unfortunately they no longer make it. I really like all my cz’s BUT while they have better fit and finish than my tikka’s none of them are quite as accurate- and I have 4 tikkas. Tikkas seem to cost a bit more so…. Pick your poison but you can’t go wrong with a cz

The only thing I wish my CZ 557's came with is the SST, as in the 550. Otherwise, a very well made rifle and even more refined than the 550. The adjustable iron sights are also a big step up from the 550. I don't find my wood stocked 557's any less accurate than my Tikka's, I would say about the same. The CZ hammer forged barrels are excellent.
