I was out for some shooting recently and had a couple small issues with my 858. It failed to feed several times, and I had one light primer strike that didn't fire. I have a pretty good feeling that it's just the ammunition I'm using (come to think of it, I may have actually had this problem about 6 months ago), which is corrosive I bought from crappy tire. I noticed the odd round has black gunk on the casing (live rounds), which could be preventing the round from sliding up the feed ramp.. As far as the light primer strike, which didn't set the round off, I'd like to know what would cause that. It's the first and only time I've had it happen to me. My rifle has about 200 rd's through it and it's spotless. I clean it thoroughly after each outing.

Light strike might not be a light strike, are you getting a dead trigger? Like when the bolt flys open and then forward and chambers round but you pull trigger and nothing, then you manually eject the round an look at the primer and it has a small dent? That small dent is from the bolt flying forward and the firing pin lighty tapping it from the forward momentum. This is how I discovered the gremlin the first time. If this isn't your situation then I would also try blowing some g96 cleaner into the back side of your bolt right where the striker goes In and slams Into the ass of the firing pin. Squirt a bunch in there and then blow a bunch of compressed air into it to flush out the black gunk and crap that builds up and wipe it all off the face of the bolt where the bullet case rests in, that crud can slow Down your pin alot and make light strikes. It seems odd your having issues so early on in the life of the rifle. Other than the gremlin I've had maybe 3 ftf and one fte, in nearly 3000rds of corrosive surplus thru still runs like a champ. Same springs and everything

You mentioned surplus ammo, but is it steel cased? The only time I have failure to feed is with brass casings - ppu (or nny if you prefer) specifically. The steel runs fine.

Try what supahdave mentions, about cleaning the bolt. The striker could be bottoming against residue in the bolt. I had it happen with a shotgun, where the firing pin wouldn't travel enough at times because of buildup inside the bolt body.

supahdave, what you described is exactly what happened. And the cause for failure makes sense, as I've not cleaned the back side of the bolt with compressed air before. Makes perfect sense. As far as the failures to feed, the rounds I'm currently shooting are brass cased. I don't really recall any failures with this rifle prior to this batch of ammunition. I've only got several rounds left. I'd be happy to hear suggestions on where to find the best corrosive or even non-corrosive crates for a decent price. Of course, reliability comes before savings.

Thanks for the help, guys! I'll give the bolt a good cleaning and run some new ammo through it and report back in case anyone else runs into the same problems I had.

Sounds like your rifle has the "gremlin". Look up the gremlin issue online. I had this and sent my 858 to czub and they fixed it for free by installing a shim on the sear

gremlin is caused by the way you pull the trigger. my 858 has it but i guess i just pull the trigger right its only happened 4 or 5 out of a thousand rounds its no big deal.
