My 858's grey paint finish is flaking off all over.

Looks like shat. Feels like shat. It's shat lol

I'm tossing up between two options here.

I'm not looking to drop hundreds of bucks on a cheap hammered out surplus Block rifle.

So Armacoat is out of the question here.

I just want flat black or very dark grey and durable.

I'm currently leaning towards Duracoat or Krylon Flat Black paint. I have access to equipment to easily and safely sand blast off the last of the ####ty paint finish.

Can anyone post some pics of their rifles with either finish? Or educate me on the pro's and cons of each?

I don't know much about either to be honest. I never thought I'd see the day were I spray painted a rifle but here I am lol

Any info and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Best bet would be to cerakote it. Better stuff all around.

You buy the rifle new or used??

My CZ's paint finsh is durable as hell. Its been well taken care of but no paint flaking.

Oh, and my 2 CZ's arent "new finishes" just the standard thick grey crap on em.

Yep sandblast and degrease it with acidtone. Then I would steer clear of Krylon. Although you can get arma-coat in the 2 part expoy and do it yourself. It would probaly cost you like $50 or so dollars to get the paint and do it your self. With that being said I would take a trip down to your local paint store and ask for some ceramic coating 2 part expoy and get them to color match the color you are looking for then only get a quart of it. Or buy dura-coat.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I bought the rifle usd for a song.

It's in great shape. Bore is still very strong.

But the finish on the barrel and front sight even some spots on the receiver are flaking and chipping off :(

So I guess I will look into the dura-coat black.

Is it an easy process to do on your own after I sandblast it and clean it with acetone?

I'm assuming I only want to blast and duracoat the visible surfaces correct? Stay clear of any of the internal action parts and the chamber obviously?

Anyone have a pic of a duracoated CZ for reference?

I'd stay away from krylon, even after sandblasting, priming and spraying with krylon flat black the finish was crap. It chipped very easily, its actually more durable before it fully cures. VHT flame proof coating looked the same but was much more durable even though I didnt bake it on like youre supposed to. Arma-coat sells preval sprayer kits for $15 and IIRC a 4 oz. bottle of arma-coat is $25. It air cures so you wont have to bake it like most other finishes.

Ack.

Thanks for the heads up. Krylon never really sat well with me. Spray paint is usefull stuff but I couldn't see it being suitable for a rifle.

I'll look up the DIY Armacoat method.

For what it's worth, I Krylon'd a Remington 870 years ago with camo paint and a few coats of matte clear coat and it is holding up to this day. Looks not too bad too. The CZ would be ok with Krylon if you weren't expecting it to be a work of art afterwards.

Yep air dry and paint. Then bake & cool dry. Also ear plug's work great for the chamber end of the bore and also were the gas piston meets the gas assembley. All other stuff don't worry about it as long as you completely strip the reciever including that little set screw were it locks down the saftey.
