Well with spring come a very good time or excuse to buy me another rifle. This one is going to be more for plinking and gophers shooting. I am torn between getting a CZ 858 or a Ruger Mini 14 or 30. Any thought on which way I should go. Thanks for the info. TUNA

I have both firearms. CZ for surplus, Mini 14 for .223. You can put a scope much easier on a Mini 14 than on a CZ. Non surplus 7.62x39 is more expensive (much) than .223, of course because the caliber is quite bigger, therefore more recoil. The CZ is more rough and the quality is not as good as the Mini 14, changing magazines is easier on the CZ, better trigger too. I like them both for what they are. I really like the fact that you can feed the CZ with stripper clips, much less hassle to feed and shoot.

The mini30 is the most inaccurate $1000 rifle in existence. Yuck.

Probably if you use surplus ammo. Above 50 yards there won't be a difference between SKS and Mini 30. Mind you, my Norinco SKS is an excellent shooter, the Chinese SKS are the best money can buy right now.

Mini 30 doesn't equals Mini 30 (same valid for Mini 14). The new 580/581 are much more accurate out of the box, some minor modifications will make both of them very good rifles.

I owned a Mini 14 and put a lot of $ and time into really dressing it up ( Choate folder, good scope, 5/20 mags, quad rail etc. ) and liked it for what it was but I have a bone stock CZ858 with no mods and I consider it the superior firearm. It is as or more accurate, the ammo is currently quite cheap, the handling is excellent ( no AR but neither is the Mini 14 ) and 100% reliable ( which, btw, so was the Mini ). So, my vote is 858 all the way.

The new mini 14's with the heavier tapered barrels are excellent shooters and they are nice in stainless. Lightweight and very reliable, tough guns. I have one and love it. I also have a CZ858 with all the FAB stuff and NEA mount. I absolutely love it too. The mini is much easier to scope with its integral mounts and mine will shoot into about 1.5-2" all day. The CZ is much cheaper to shoot and I think a better buy for the money, but it is all in what you want. Take a look at each and when you cannot decide, buy both. Liberals will hate that.

If you like accurate rifles go with the cz858.I have owned both cz858 and mini 30 .I recently sold my mini 30 after 5 years of use.I do not use it much now that i have the cz 858.The cz kicks less than the mini with the same ammo, i do not know why it is just smoother to shoot.cz is a little easier to clean but it is not stainless like the mini 30.

Traded my Mini-30 last year for 3 pistols. I was happy and confirmed that the Mini-30 tied up too much firearm capital.

Mini-30 was or is a nice enough rifle but for the money, and given your choice (or lack of it), go 858. But if it were me, for the same money as the Mini-30....2 Russian SKSs and 3 or more cases CZ surplus ammo.

The mini 14 is a more elgant rifle and personally I would not consider a Mini 30 ever as there are more rifles out there which can shoot surplus ammo. But the Mini 14 shoots a completely different round than a CZ-858, therefore you cannot really compare them. To me, it was the choice between an AR and a Mini 14.
