I've noticed that when I chamber a round in my CZ 858 and then unchamber the round without pulling the trigger, there is a small but noticeable dent in the primer.

I don't think this is the "gremlin" as it works just fine, no problems with surplus ammo.

I've read some posts here in the past (don't remember where) where this is discussed as not being that big of an issue as the surplus ammo is designed to take this kind of thing.

I'd really like to take my CZ 858 hunting this fall. Obviously I can't use the surplus ammo for hunting.

So my questions for everybody;

Does this happen on your CZ 858? Does it happen with every rifle or does this only happen with some rifles?

Is it a big deal?

How do I fix it?

I just tried with mine and I can't seem to make a dent. With the striker locked back, the firing pin floats all the way back into the breech block even when the carrier is fully locked back.

With your carrier locked back is the firing pin flush?

Don't fix it cuz there is nothing wrong.
All free floating firing pins create dimplers on primer's. Just don't use soft primers. Also the bucks still feer the 858!

Yes, it's actually a little bit recessed. It's free to move around though if I tilt the rifle forwards of course.

Nice buck! I've got a POSP scope on mine as well, but went for the 4x. What brands of commercially available hunting ammunition do you recommend? What brands would you avoid? I thought all commercial primers were relatively soft compared with the surplus ammo.

My FSN01 dents the primers.

So far it happens on 2 out of 3....wait, if you include mine that's 3 out of 4.

I have noticed on fired ejected casings i have a small scratch and slight indent on the side but not on unfired primer.

Lots of semi actions dent the primer.

Federal primers are more sensitive. Don't use them.

If you want peace of mind, make soft point ammo by pulling the military bullet and seating a soft point. Cheap and effective.

When I do this, I dump all the powder, size all the necks to make them real tight, and re-weigh the powder. You can seath the 150 round nose bullets intended for the 30-30. They will expand properly.

I wish it was mine but it was the owner/operator of Infratek's buck. I prefer Igman although it's hard to find now day's. As for pimmer's there is only 1 that I like and that is CCI mil-spec primer's. Here is a link to the chart;

If I'm not mistaken the scratch and dent would be the ejector doing it's job. What I'm talking about is a small circular dimple directly in the center of the primer.

Another vote for no dent on the chambered but unfired primer. That makes it 3 out of 5 this happens on so far.

That's a good idea. Any problems re-sizing a steel neck vs a copper one?

It sounds like I might need to reload my own......I really don't want to do that for this caliber. For 99.9% of my shooting the surplus is just fine. It's just for hunting, and that's about 1-2 rounds per year and I figure about 20 rounds initially to note any differences in the ballistics between the two rounds.

I'm going to keep trying to find a commercially available round.

So far the options are

Igman

Any other suggestions from anyone? Anyone know where to buy?

Don't even attempt to reload steel case ammo for this rifle please. Not worth it and there are lotz of companies that make soft tipped ammo like Privi and S&B. I just recomended Igman's because in my 858 it groups the best. As for ammo all the site sponsers should have some sort of x39 soft point availble for sale just ask them. Or if it is just a couple of rounds a year look for the Norinco or MFS disposable. Considering that this rifle platform tosses the spent casing into the next area code any ways. So if I was you before picking a company because some one recommends 1 get a whole bunch of different brands and see witch one your rifle prefers over the others.

It's common on autoloading milsurp rifles with free floating firing pins. My M1 Garand and CZ 858 do this. I've shot many many rounds with both guns and have never had a slam fire...you should be fine unless you use ammo with soft primers or perhaps seat the primer too high (although this would be an issue on any gun).
