CZ Brno Effect single shot rifle

They look very interesting to me, and much more affordable than a typical German Kipplauf from Blaser, Merkel, Kreighoff etc. But I have not seen one either. I wonder about the US importer choosing to only import the ones in .30-06 and .308. I would not choose a rimless case for any break action rifle, that's why they make rimmed versions! A 7x65R would be a great chambering.

I was going to say, while I do have a 30-06 version, I would prefer a rimmed round.
It doesnt have an ejector - only an extractor, and with cold fingers, its a bit tough.

Light, very accurate - good BRNO bbl, but cheapy roll engraving. Double set single trigger that i always like. Decent wood, but crappy poly type finish. handles well.

Compared it to a Merkel with the same break design, the Merkel is like a Rolex and the BRNO is like a Timex. I like it a lot and have never had an issue with it . An old design of theirs just updated - a very good truck gun (easy to load and unload quickly and see that it is safe as it is broken open) or carry rifle. Did I say it was light?

the price scared me off, actually the price differential between here and the US, something like $700 more up here.

There was a post on 24hr Campfire where a Canadian member bought one for $1600 iirc. He even posted the importer's name and contact info.

I am sure clay could bring one in - when I would get them, I would talk to Epps and they would talk to the Canadian CZ importer fellow... he would bring the odd one in. Same with the "new" BRNO o/u double rifles or combo guns.

Dont know how it works now re the CZ lineup and importation into Canada.

I am sold on it already. Love the way the stutzen model looks. I have a CZ550FS in 6.5x55 with really nicely figured but not over the top Turkish walnut. If the Effect has that kind of wood grade, I'd be happy.

Farshot, thanks for the comments on handling and cold weather reloading. I was surprised to hear the finish is like poly, rather than a rubbed oil finish.

Farshot, can you comment more on the trigger? I thought it was a single set trigger, not double that is advertised. Also, is it adjustable to a crisp 3 lb pull (without the set)?

I was thinking of even driving to Montana to handle one since there are none around here (Calgary). Then I would be stoked to custom order....probably a 6.5x57R.

Does anyone know of one in a dealer's stock?

I dont think it can get down to 3 lbs - I will check soon and get back to you. Mine is a single set trigger.

I am not saying it is a poly finish - it is a hard surface finish tho.

I wanted the full stock as well - at the time it was just impossible to get from CZ to here. Now - anything is possible as CZ USA is a lot bigger and better organized.

Longwalker, I agree. the 7x65R would be one of my choices also, say if the 6,5x57R is not available.

How about thatBlaser K95 Stutzen Edition? Looks like a great rifle. I handled the non-stutzen version recently and was impressed.

Much appreciated Farshot!

One other question, is the break open easy and smooth right from when it was new?

yes - it breaks fine. But as with all break action rifles, you have to be very concerned with loads and brass. As an example, my Baikal (sp?) 3006 double will only take winchester brass - the rim thickness is a thou or two thinner. Other wise the action will not close on that double.

With loads - if you get too much horsepwer , you may not be able to open the action. You do not have the camming power of a bolt.

I have not noticed such a hiccup with the Effect, but it is not one I shoot a ton. It is so light and handy that, like the Blaser one, it would make a good mountain or packing rifle.

Right now I have a 3-9 Scopechief on it cause that is what was laying around at the time - I would likely go to a lighter, compact scope for it.

I have noticed that in general the newer CZ/Brno break action rifles and double rifles and combo guns all have a hideous poly finish. The walnut is usually beautiful, but the finish leaves alot to be desired. CZ barrels are second to none, as are the triggers, so I suppose at the price point, a poor wood finish is to be expected. Easily remedied with stripper and tung oil. The break actions from CZ/Brno that I've seen usually require a break-in period as they start off pretty damn stiff.

Thanks guys. I plan to order some RWS brass when I order the Brno. You would think that brass should be ok for it.

Farshot, I forgot whether to ask, do Brno scope rings came with the rifle?

no rings ........... - it uses - if i remember - the 110 brno base and rings. I got mine from good old Tradex

I just checked tradex - they dont have the old 110 series but I THINK the ZH series that they do have has the same dovetail size. The mount sure looks the same as the 110.

Good thing about BRNO is that things dont change there much over the decades.
