Hello,

I have been asking questions and researching information on the 870 and the Nova.
My hesitation with either begins and ends with cleaning.
My hunting partner is a firm believer in the simplicity of a O/U (safety, cleaning).

With that, and many hours spent digging through this forum, I have started looking at $500 O/U's. I don't want to buy used. I never plan to shoot skeet with it, and I plan on using it for rabbit, and deer in WMU's where I can't use my rifle.

I wondering about the double triggers and the general reliability of the CZ MALLARD 104D O/U.

The description for the firearm is:

28" VR BBLS, SCREW IN CHOKES (5), COIN FINISHED RECIEVER, TURKISH WALNUT SEMI PISTOL GRIP STOCK WITH SCHNABEL FORE END, DOUBLE TRIGGER, EXTRACTORS, RECOIL PAD.

Why does it have 2 triggers?
I cannot ascertain this online.

Does this make it more reliable than a Stoeger Condor?

Will I be able to put slugs in it and have it be accurate withing 75 yards?

Thanks in advance.

1 trigger fires one barrel, the other trigger fires the other barrel.

I have a SuperNova and cleaning is a non-issue. Some of my less tidy acquaintances forgo cleaning their Benelli's all together and it doesn't seem to affect their performance.

For your intended use, though, I would strongly suggest the 870, what with rifled barrels being available and all.

If you are only going to pursue deer and rabbits it may be to your benefit to use a 20 gauge. Less recoil in both cases and you will save some weight as well. I looked at the Mallard for a long time and shot one of the first batch to enter the country. I would say it is the best of any of the cheap O/U's available.

I ended up buying used on the EE and picked up a slightly used Franchi for less than 1/5 of it's original price, fellow had it marked WTB instead of WTS so no-one gave his ad any notice.

I don't have access to EE. What is WTB or WTS?

My local (GTA) retailer told me that a rifled nova barrel would cost as much as the nova...

WTB is want to buy, WTS is want to sell.

I haven't seen many rifled Benelli barrels that weren't attached to guns, that being said I don't believe it would cost 600$ plus for a barrel either. I would contact Ellwood Epps a sponsor at the top of the page, they are the best when it comes to tracking down stuff that others can't or won't get.

The dealer has nova's for 500. He estimated at least 450 for a benelli barrel.

The dealer is probably giving you the straight goods. If the Nova is new and is only $500.00 he is probably flogging it out at cost or below his cost. It may be a special clear out special promo that he has from Stoeger Canada. There is no similar deal on barrels. The reason being is that your dealer's supplier does not keep extra barrels in stock.

The 2 trigger thing has been answered.
Everything is more reliable than a Stoeger Condor.
accurate within 75 yards? Both barrels are probably not accurate within 50 yards.

Just called a dealer with Mallard's in stock. He explained that while it was prettier than the Condor, many of the units they've sold have come back with serious issues: double fire, failed safety and frankly I forget the third because I was in shock. He said Condor over Mallard, and he doesn't even stock the Condor right now...

Hello, Nova.

A Nova for $500.00 is a good deal.

Shot a few novas recently, I was contemplating a 20 gauge Comfortech, lets just say that I won't be purchasing one. I would say 500$ is all I would pay, I don't like them. Picked the first one up and it felt "plastic-ey" if you know what I mean, like a Mossberg Maverick or 870 Express synthetic.

Just my 2 cents.I would go CZ.

Yes I do know what you mean! I am not particularly keen on them myself. Mechanically they are sound and very popular. I was just saying that $500.00 is a good price. I would pick one over every pump out there with the exception of the wingmaster and the bps. 2 cents for the CZ is about right.

I'd question your desire for an O/U if you are planning to go for deer. A pump would be much better say an 870 or a Mossberg package - do some more research! FWIW - An 870 has less mechanical complexity than most O/U's.

You meant more mechanical crappyness than most O/U's,right.

I have had a justifiable hate on for the recent 870's but, the older ones are nice, I have been working with two limited runs, a 16 and a 20 Lightweight Uplans Special they have been problem free but the youngest is from 1987. The new Expresses are garbage, I have been saying this for years and apparently people are getting the message finally.

I have used my O/U Skeet choked gun for deer and coyotes and while I didn't connect it did group passably with slugs between 4.5 and 7 inches for 4 shots, two from each barrel at 50 yards. I shot #4 buck for coyotes.

I traded my two Mossbergs quite a while ago, I only miss my 500E .410.

I would bet that the OP has allready made his decision.
