Currently shooting a non match grade varmint barrel.

Thinking of upgrading to an MTR or IBI (should have bought the MTR from the start - didn’t think I’d end up moving out of production class).

Anyone have testing results of the following:

-varmint vs MTR
-MTR vs IBI

Thanks

They both have the same potential if you find a lot # it likes. The advantage with the IBI is the ability to spec it out if you have something specific in mind or want to try a faster twist. With IBI you can choose twist, overall finished length, fluting, chamber spec, muzzle thread, barrel profile...

If you want the same specs as the MTR, the MTR would be better value for money.

Here's a target sample of my first set of testing from my CZ 457 MTR with the factory 16" barrel before I bought a 16" Lilja barrel.

I'm tempted to pick up a longer 20+ inch barrel from IBI but at this time my 22lr hype is calming and getting back into CF with my Tikka CTR 223.

Barrels (or more importantly, bores) made by the same manufacturer may not shoot good ammo identically. Some will be better, some worse. The same is true for CZ barrels and for IBI barrels.

There is a potential advantage to having a "match chamber" in a CZ barrel, but the most important factor in how the barrel will shoot good lots of ammo is the bore itself. A non-match chambered barrel with a good bore will shoot good ammo better than a match chambered barrel with an average bore.

The CZ MTR is a mass-produced factory rifle with a mass-produced factory barrel. IBI is a barrel maker. While their .22LR barrels may not be of equal quality of the best custom .22LR barrels from the U.S., if IBI generally makes good barrels/bores, the odds of getting a good IBI barrel may well be greater than that of getting a mass-produced factory CZ MTR barrel with an equally good bore.

Of course, it's important to remember that no rifle/barrel, whatever the make, will outshoot the ammo it's given. In other words, no matter how good it is, the barrel itself will not make careful ammo selection any less important.

I kinda wish I had got a 16" MTR

So how does the MTR compare to your new Lilja?

I can only compare with my barrels and LOT ammo combo and will say that it's about the same if not just lightly better precision with my Lilja barrel. Nothing to brag about and I wouldn't dish out the money for a current price of a new Lilja barrel. No regrets purchasing the Lilja back then when the price was cheaper. And I've installed that MTR match barrel onto my other CZ457 that came with a pencil barrel. I was considering the 20" version but it did not come threaded which was something I wanted on my barrel.

The CZ's are getting neglected as I'm back into CF with my Tikka CTR 223.
