So many models, sometimes very subtle differences, sometimes major changes. The information I find is all over the map. So I figured maybe I can get a straight answer once and for all.

Can you rank the following CZ pistols, from good to best and give a small one line description of each model (or the difference with the lower model). Ex: firing pin block, ambi and ajustable sights

SP-01
75
SP-01 shadow
SP-01 shadow 2
SP-01 canadian edition
SP-01 tactical
SP-01 shadowline
75 shadowline

Assuming it's for competition:

Shadow 2
The rest

Period :p

Depends on which competition. Does the Shadow 2 fit the box for IDPA?

I had the same question several years ago. Never got a straight answer as to whether any better fitting was done to the more expensive models.

We’ve all heard how great the shadow 2 is. But what makes it better and is it better than all the other ones ? Maybe it is.. maybe it isn’t. That was the point of my question.

Not looking at a specific competition. Just looking for facts and features.

The term shadow means no firing pin block (witch I recommend)
I believe "sp-01" means full length dust cover
I really like the sp01 shadow but the shadow 2 has a few nice additions.
I may actually just install the shadow 2 mag release in the sp01 shadow and try that for ipsc/uspsa production...

General Rules:

> Any SP-01 has full length dust cover and hence is heavier, but potentially more stable to shoot.
> Any Shadow or Shadowline does not have a firing pin block safety, and hence the trigger is better
> Shadow or Shadowline models usually have higher quality sights, as well as higher quality barrels and stainless steel guide rods.

Look here for details on each: http://cz-usa.com/product-category/handguns/75-full-size-series/

Tactical sport orange is my favorite and no I don't have one because my budget is capped at the shadow sp01 and I shoot shadow cla...... I mean production class.

I would try the sp01 shadow and the shadow and see which one fits your grip better, They do feel different.
One of those guns is my suggestion. The s2 is a bit more accurate

The Shadow2 at 47+ oz. is to heavy for IDPA. It doesn't matter if it fits in the box or not.

To the OP most of the CZ pistols share the same trigger group.

Various models differ in the amount of finish each enjoys. Some have a manual safety while others have a decocker. Other variants include those with a 1913 rail while others have no rail at all. All can be tuned with a decent trigger job. The best trigger of any of my guns is on a CZ 85 Combat the late Ken Soucie did for me. The gun would be the last one I ever sell, the trigger is that good. I have a relatively newly produced Shadow with a trigger that is not much better than a stock 75B with a 13# main spring.

If you are interested in a hammer fired pistol in the CZ line for competition then you really can't go wrong with a Shadow for both IDPA and IPSC. It won't be the gun that defines your score in either sport for a very long time.

Ok, but why? I understand the Shadow2 is a step up if you’re shooting IPSC production, but what makes the Canadian better than say a Shadow Orange or a Shadowline? People say the more expensive ones are better but never give objective reasons why; I’m sure that they hope the extra $800 gave them a superior gun but it doesn’t make it fact. Even the CZ website is terribly vague making me question if it’s all just marketing. Would you be better off buying a standard model and sending it to a competent gunsmith?

I’m not trying to ruffle feathers, just always wondered this exact question.

Most;y because they cost more although the Shadow2 goes for less than some of the others. If you are just starting out spend the difference from the Shadow2 to the Shadow on ammunition and practice.

I've often wondered the same, both about CZ and some other brands that seem to have about a zillion models. . The details on how the various models differ and why some are so much more costly seem very elusive and almost impossible to nail down. That makes the cynic in me suspect it's mostly about cosmetics, brand image and advertising hype ......kinda like paying thousands more for the "Super Sport" version of a car and really getting nothing more than pinstripes, fancier wheels and a bolt on spoiler.

I am a fan of the CZ85C, as mentioned prior they have everything I need, but I don’t compete, just range plinker. Go to the CZ web site to explore the differences, they each have unique features, which would take to long for these fingers to type.

Interesting thread and timely as a CZ Shadow is next on my purchase list, I'd be very interested in hearing the differences as well and which are the best "bang" for the buck as I'm still debating between a 1 or 2.

If you're going to shoot it stock or maybe change mainspring out for a lighter one and not compete in matches, the Shadow is the better buy.

If you plan on shooting matches, prefer a lighter/smoother trigger with shorter trigger reset, competition style hammer, higher undercut on the trigger guard and beaver tail grip, aluminum grips, extended mag release, more aggressive frontstrap/backstrap checkering, aggressive slide serrations and steel guide rod to name a few enhancements, the Shadow 2 is definitely the better buy.

I do stand corrected on the Shadow 1 being IDPA legal and the Shadow 2 specific only for IPSC. So it all depends on what you plan on doing. The Shadow 1 is good, but I do like the extra weight, extended mag release, thinner front sight post, and more aggressive grip texture on the Shadow 2 to justify spending the extra $400 or so over the Shadow 1. For IDPA, I prefer using my Glock anyway.
