I'm considering picking up this new handgun shortly. The price seems right, but I noticed CRAFM is offering a tuned version for a few hundred dollars more. While I know that I personally won't notice the difference (some of you might), I am wondering if the additional cost for the following extras is worth it.

Main Spring, Recoil Spring, Competition Hammer, Low Profile Ambis, Grips, Trigger Job

I certainly am not competitive at this point, so that pretty much answers the question, but I like the "do it right the first time" mantra. I have yet to obtain my Black Badge. I will be shortly. I intend on going the IPSC route, but not necessarily at a hardcore competitive level at this point. I know I will be able to easily tackle the springs, hammer, ambis and grips; but I don't think I would try a trigger job myself.

Including the cost of the individual components and the labor, how much would you folks say these upgrades are worth? If I can save those dollars and put them toward the rest of my rig purchase, then that's what I'll do.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Read IPSC Rule Book to understand what can and cannot be done to the gun.
Then speak with IPSC competitors who do it for a few years...

I am already in contact with the right people for the IPSC side of things. My question is pertaining to the work on the pistol, bot about IPSC rules. Thanks again.

Shadows are great as they are right out the box, which is one of the nice things about them as they dont need a whole lot of money spent on them and gunsmith time to be IPSC ready. My Shadow came with DA/SA pulls of 8 and 3.25 lbs,you dont want to go much lighter than this as a new shooter anyway. It also smoothed out with a bit of use.

If anything, replace the recoil/mainspring to lighter ones which should cost all of $15(and which is IPSC legal),save the balance of the money saved on upgrades for magazines, ammo etc and shoot the pistol.Depending on your preferences and hand size, you may also want to replace the rubber grips with thinner aluminum ones, but shoot the gun first to get a feel of it first.

What weight of recoil/ mainsprings do people tend to switch to? I took my shadow out for the first time on Saturday and there was a guy there that had one as well that shot ipsc, and he mentioned the lighter springs also but I cant remember what weight he mentioned. He let me pull the trigger on the two pistols side by side and I could feel the difference.

So I guess my q to the ipsc guys is what weight recoil/mainspring to they swap to?
(sorry, not trying to jack your thread)

I shoot with an 11lb recoil spring and a 13lb main spring. DA trigger is now about 7-8 lbs and still sets off the primers for pretty much anything I throw at it. 2k+ rounds at the moment and still goin. With 1 ftf. (extractor issue)

Awndray, buy it stock and swap out the standard 18# mainspring for a 13# spring, and you'll notice a huge improvement. It's easy to do, there have been a few threads on the procedure. That's the biggest improvement right there, and the cost is peanuts: under $20.00, including shipping.

one of my friends bought a crafm upgraded shadow. He was having problems with the sear engagement. The shadow is usable right out of the box save some money and own a more reliable pistol.

Very much appreciated, folks. I like when I can get specific information without having to sift thought a number of convoluted threads.

Thanks for the responses :)

Sorry again op not trying to jack lol.

What does lightenning the recoil spring do? Whats the benefit i mean. I'm sure this is a stupid question lol..
Could you put a 13lb mainspring in and leave the recoil spring stock? Would that mess anything up? Thanks again

I should've elaborated. You can leave the stock recoil spring alone without problems.

The reason I went to a lighter spring since I shoot relatively light loads. I progressively put in weaker springs and watched the ejection pattern (2 to 4 o'clock). Shooting heavier loads would warrant a heavier spring. Ymmv

K cool, thanks man. I was shooting 115gr shells and they were running perfect. Although I've only shot it once lol. I'm thinking I'm gonna order that 13lb mainspring. And maybe splurge in the comp hammer lol.

everything they list in that competition setup is fine for IPSC. The single biggest improvements being the hammer and flush safeties.
