Hi all,

I thought I may want to enter some competitions some day so I ended up picking up a CZ SP-01 Shadow. I did not get the Shadow 2 because it was sold out at most shops and/or the prices had increased significantly. My question for those in the know is whether modifications can take the SP-01 to Shadow 2 levels. Also just thoughts about the SP-01 generally. Thanks!

IF you decide to go to Production Optics you can mill the slide for whatever red dot you want to use for about $150 (plus the cost of the dot)

Aside from some slightly better ergonomics, which may be a matter of taste, and the aesthetics... they aren't a world apart. Just get good with what you have, buy a spring kit, get a gunsmith to tune the trigger and put 500 rounds through it before going any further on trying to make it something it isn't.
 
S2 fits my hands slightly better than S1, but it is not night and day difference. Someone else could find S1 fits them better. S2 frame has slightly deeper trigger guard undercut and slightly more pronounced “hump” on the back of the grip.

A stock out of the box S1 will definitely benefit from a trigger job and springs. Both are DYIable for some with basic mechanical skills.

Common mods assuming you are using commercial ammo or light handloads:
lighter hammer spring to reduce double action trigger pull force, 13 lbs offers good balance between trigger pull and reliability
lighter firing pin spring to prevent light primer strikes, only required with lighter than 13 lbs hammer spring
recoil spring dialed to the ammo used (less powerful loads = lighter recoil spring), 11 lbs usually works well

With full power 9mm NATO ammo, use stock springs.

Trigger job : better hammer, short reset disconnector, lightly polish the trigger bar. Upgrade parts are available from CZ, Cajun Gun Works, or Eemann Tech.

Eemann and Cajun also sell complete upgrade kits. Cajun is great but expensive, out of stock usually. Eemann is much cheaper and readily available (IPSC Store dot com ships from Estonia, there are a few Canadian dealers as well).

The guns are different. I don't have a ton of trigger time on the 2 yet but I think I prefer my 1. It just seems to fit better in my hands (with the thin alum grips).

I’d say replace recoil and hammer springs as mentioned, may be put steel recoil rod, if you have plastic one. After that shoot 2k rounds and see what happens. Gun will become much smoother. Unless you are solid C shooter you may not notice difference with the rest of upgrades.
 
I had my RPAL for years but kept putting this hobby on the backburner due to life, work, kids etc. Only had a Ruger Mark III until recently. New legislation prompted me to jump straight into the deep end with purchases to cover my wish list and all possibilities down the road that I could anticipate.

My plan is to start stock to get to know the CZ and acquire some skills and then upgrade so I can actually feel the difference. Then I will assess whether I am actually good enough to benefit from the remainder of the upgrades. Great advice. Appreciate it.
