I now have both the SP-01 and the SP-01 Shadow. Both at the present time are bone stock. They both are the three slot versions. I want at least one gun for SSP IDPA , preferably both. If I can't get the weight down to 39oz for the Shadow it will be my IPSC Production gun.

Both guns have identical frames and are listed on the CZUB web site as weighing 1180 grams. My scale shows the SP-01 to weigh 40.5 oz while the Shadow weighs 41.2 oz.

The Shadow has fixed compettion sights while the SP-01 has fixed night sights. The Shadow has the CZ85 trigger which is chromed while the SP-01 has a blued trigger. Take up in DA is a tad shorter with the Shadow over the SP-01. Triggers on both guns are very smooth and light.

I have the following parts coming. I have indicated the weight difference determined by Ghost Products Inc. vs stock parts.

LHS Safety Minus .2 oz
Aluminum Mag Brake Minus .2 oz
Dennis Marshall grips Minus 1.9 oz!

By my calculations the SP-01 will be legal just by changing the grips.

The Shadow with all the above changes will weigh in at 38.9 oz. Life is good and the universe is in balance.

PS The Shadow is scary accurate. I haven't shot the SP-01 yet but I have every reason to think it too will be as accurate.

The Shadow I think will be my next Pistol. Are those grips you ordered Aluminum?
Also where did you order them from. I might start collecting the parts before I purchase the firearm. What Holster are you using for these in IDPA/IPSC? I was thinking the DOH for IPSC, but what to use for IDPA?

I ordered wooden grips from Dennis Marshall out of Hungry. They weigh in at .4 oz. Order the Maple Grips. You have to put the Shadow on a bit of a diet to make it IDPA legal ie Has to weigh under 39 oz to play in SSP Division. The Marshall grips are the lightest grips I could find and are said to be the lightest available.

The SP-01 Shadpw is tougher to get down to weight than the regular SP-01 if you are thinking of shooting IDPA.

I am going to order the Blade Tec Bobby McGee Pro Series IDPA PAK. I have similar set up for my Tanfoglio, M&P and 1911's. I use the same rig for IPSC Production as well as IDPA. I have a dropped and offset attachment for the Blade Tec holster but don't bother changing it out anymore. I didn't find there was any difference in draw time for me so changing it out every other week didn't make any sense to me.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jason.

Yes the SP-01 is lighter than the Shadow. I suspect it has to do with the Firing Pin Block cut out in the slide/frame which the Shadow does not have. The external differences in sights for example is offset to dome dgree by the added weight of the lanyard loop.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at the weight of the SP-01 as all I have to do is replace the grips as opposed to having to buy another set of parts.

Hi

All weights are taken with mags in. I should point out my new Shadow was made in 2008. The SP-01 was made in 2006. Newer production of the SP-01 may weigh differently.

YUP! Should read 2006 and 2008, amended post. I bought the SP-01 off a guy back east who put 1500 rds through the gun. It has never been in a holster and has no wear on it at all. I may get out this week-end and add to the total. In time I may change the night sights to FO Competition sights like those on the Shadow as the gun's primary purpose is for playing IDPA and IPSC.

My Commander 1911 is for dealing with Zombie attacks.:D

How much did your original grips weigh and have you by any chance investigated the weight of the aluminum grips which are also used by some?

Unless the aluminium is milled out from the back or is just very thin sheets then wood grips will still be far lighter.

Maple, birch, walnuts of various sorts and even oak are quite light and would produce the lightest grips short of going with pine or other easily marked woods you'll get. The more resin'y exotics like cocobolo, rosewood, zebrawood and some others are a lot more dense due to the oily nature of the wood and are not going to be much, if any, lighter than plastic grips.

If the goal is to shave off the last couple of grams then I'd say the less dense hardwoods is the way to go. Or if long term durability isn't an issue there's some nice looking softwoods that if you select the right piece can make superb grips. You'll just want to try to watch bumping them against hard edges more than the hardwoods.

For example I've got a stock of hemlock here that has a fantastic grain to it. Yet normally this is a basic construction junk wood. But once I found the first such piece I've managed to lay in a stock of a few others with similar grain. I've done some shop knife and turned file handles with it and it's standing up well, for a softwood, and still looks great.

I ordered thin wooden grips from Marshall Grips out of Hungry. They weigh in at .4 oz. The Aluminum grips run around an oz. Price was $45.00US + Shipping. They are Maple and I am having then finished in a deep dark red stain.

If I get my Shadow down to 39 oz as planned I'll order another set for the SP-01

Hi John, I ordered a LHS from Ghost. Likely the same part as a 75B. The part saves .2oz. I sent Gunnar a list of parts I was using to get down to 39 oz. It is going to be close. The SP-01 starts out lighter so it is easier to get below 39 oz. Just replacing the grips does it. We can also window our mags to squeeze the last weight out of the gun.
