Hi folks,

I'm looking at some CZ VZ-24 and German Mauser K98 and was wondering what is the best one in terms of reliability /value for $. I like the shorter CZ VZ-24 but maybe I should get the original K98?

Any opinions?

Well VZ 24 is an excellent choice and k 98 is a great collectible but... prices have gone insane. The russian rough capture is 600. As far as mauser guns are concerned If i was you i would grab anything in good condition and matching simply because they will always go up in value. For example... right now you can get an excellent spanish or swede mauser from 3-400 soon when k98 guns are too expensive for most even the more affordable guns will go up. And... even the other countries mauser guns for most part were still made in germany or are high quality firearms such as carl gustav or husky. As for me i would love a matching polish WZ29. Simply out of my reach. So i am happy that 6.5x55 CG i purchased from BMcK here on cgn.

Value wise it is much easier to find a nice VZ-24 than it is to find a nice K98k and it will cost significantly less.

This. Functionally pretty much the same rifle, but the K98k is more collectible (if not RC). If you're planning on shooting it get the Vz-24. By no means an exhaustive search, but only place I can find them in stock is Lever Arms... $350.

TEC Tradex has a Yugo capture K98k for $495, and a heap of Swede Mausers in 6.5.

Get the VZ24 for starters. Prices for an arsenal refinished VZ24 run around $350 and quality and bores are usually excellent. The VZ24 is every bit as good quality wise as a German K98 as the Czechs produced K98's for Nazi Germany following the halt of VZ24 production. Be aware that Mausers have a way of multiplying and it helps to have an understanding wife. HAHA

I like the way the vz24s feel the stock somehow feels sturdier.that being said I realy like the bent bolt on the k 98s.i got a yugo captured 98k from tradex as a shooter .it matches and has a vg plus bore.i prefer the yc 98ks to the rc98ks.

If I was buying a VZ-24 I would wait a bit and find one with the crest still intact. But I am also a collector primarily. If I was looking for a shooter the refurbished VZ-24s are for the most part in very good shape and will run you into the 350-400 area.

Yugoslav K98ks are also a good value wise option and also tend to be in very good condition. The only thing about those is they pretty much have all the German markings scrubbed as well.

If it's: "reliability /value for $" then it sounds like you want something to shoot. Clearly the much cheaper VZ-24 is the way to go, but insist on an excellent bore.

Quality is almost identical - that is why the Wehrmacht accepted Czech arms directly into their inventories/units with no additonal proof marks/conversions - the only exception is they did modify the stocks on some VZ's to look more like a K98K stock.

Standard Russian Capture K98 is going to cost ~$600
Standard VZ24 ~$300-500

The factory refurbs were done slightly nicer on the VZ's as they often have the lustre blue - versus the dark dip blue and often stocks are nicer on a VZ. Accessories for a VZ are also cheaper.

As one member said - get both.

If you want a Main Battle rifle - K98

Budget minded - VZ

If interested PM me - I have examples of both rifles and I'm in Alberta

K98 seem to get more attention these days, but I have found the VZ24 fit n' finish nicer on the majority of examples. Pretending the cost was the same for similar condition rifles, I'd still lean toward the VZ24 personally. Considering the increasing collectibility of the K98, and the prices that keep on rising would be the biggest motivator for me to get a K98.

A little off topic, but when I was building a custom 257 Ackley Improved about 25 years ago, my gunsmith considered the VZ24 to be the more desirable action for custom builds.
I can't remember what we were paying for them then, but it was cheap enough that there was no worry in buying one to take it apart for custom work.

I own a RC K98 (bought from a CGN'er) in good shape with a decent bore. I paid $650 for it, but it did have things like the cleaning rod, front sight hood, and sling. Most of the RC K98's don't come with these little bits, so that ups the price to probably the $700-750 range. It shoots pretty well for a rifle that was captured on the Eastern Front in WWII.

If you can afford both, my suggestion would be to get both (as has been said by others). The only thing that turns me off of the VZ rifles is that straight bolt handle. I much prefer the turned down bolt handle (as that's what I grew up on, it just feels better to me when cycling the bolt from the shoulder) of the K98's. That said, aside from cosmetic things like proofmarks, the only real difference between the two is that bolt handle.
