I'm thinking about getting a CZ 512 in 22lr. I like the looks of them and want something different than a Ruger or Savage.

Does anyone here have one? If so, what is your opinion of it.

I know how to use Google and YouTube but would like to hear some opinions from guys from this community.

Bought a used one in the fall and had a chance to test it out once.

Fit and finish is nice but not spectacular. Everything is tight but the wood grain is pretty plain. Probably give it a 7.5/10.

Accuracy was pretty good across the board. I didn't bring any match ammo along but I was able to get close to 1/2" at 50 yards with average run of the mill Federal champion and CCI Standard Velocity. In the Spring I'll test it further.

It takes the same mags as the 452, 455, and 457 which is convenient for me since I already have a bunch of them. The 25 rounders worked flawlessly as well. I had heard of some guys having issues with them but I think most of them were running the tactical version of the 512.

Overall I'm very thrilled with mine. Especially for the price I paid. I'm not sure I'd be as happy if I bought it at new prices but it doesn't seem like it will disappoint if you're comfortable paying that much. Solid gun, better than acceptable accuracy.

I had a 511 many years ago, sold it in a moment of weakness, those were good solid all steel guns, wish I had that one back.
The 512 never appealed to me the way the old 511 did.

Overall the 512 is an excellent rifle — here’s mine:

Pro’s:

- good accuracy out of the box, with a wide range of ammo
- reliable
- easy to field strip/ clean
- shares mags with CZ bolt rifles; 25 rounders available
- can be dry fired, as stated in owner’s manual
- good overall build quality

Cons:

- mediocre trigger. I plan on improving it someday.

- no last-round hold-open. On the upside — it can be dry fired; bolt can be manually locked back (there’s a lock tab like a 10/22)

- no aftermarket — use it the way you bought it.

- the rear sight base interferes with the objective bells of many scope setups. It’s a pain to remove this sight base, as the barrel was not only drilled and tapped for it but they used a strong glue or epoxy as well. I had to use penetrating oil and heat, then put the barrel in a vise and tap it with a mallet. Taps became whacks before it finally let go. After all that trouble I swapped to a scope that let me put it back on with enough clearance.
