I am very interested in getting one in 7.62X39. My questions are:

  1. Does it have a free floating barrel?
  2. Does it come with scope rings? If so, what is the height? I read that some scopes will not work unless high rings are used.

I appreciate your advice.

I have a regular CZ527 223 that came with rings. They work very will with my Nikon 6-16x scope and everything looks real good together. Dont remember if the barrel was free floated but worked a deal with my regular shop and got it bedded and floated.

Mine is free floated.
Rings need to be high, mine has a 3-9 Conquest and with the bolt fully extended I have about 1/8th of an inch clearance. FS

For those who have free floated barrels, how is your accuracy? I was told light/skinny barrels work better with a little bit of pressure on the barrel at the stock's fore-end.

I'm looking for one in 7.62x39. What prices did you guys shell out for new?? A western store, to remain nameless, wants nearly $900 shipped.

Have any of you shot the surplus ammo, and what was your experiences with it?

The price is about right.I haven't shot and will shoot surplus ammo. I will shoot the fmj loaded by remington or federal as a source of brass. I use Remington's because they utilize the small rifle primer.

I purchased mine just before the HST kicked in and it came to $865 shipped. Try Wolverine or Prophet River. I have only shot once - used surplus, but with the iron sights at 100 yds I had trouble getting it on paper (I know I suck). I ordered a 3-9x32 scope and rings but haven't mounted them yet.

Is bedding absolutely necessary?

All the gun magazines I have read said this is standard operating procedure to get more accuracy out of a gun.

I can't comment on the out-of-the-box accuracy since I did not shoot it before I took it to my gunsmith. But I love the way the gun handles though.

Here's a pic of my cz527 Varmint that I got from Clay at Prophet River. Barrel is free floated and set trigger. Mine was $829 delivered and to my suprise cz rings included. Thats a bushnell 4X12X40AO scope so high rings were required. Haven't shot it enough to see how accurate but I can't wait to smoke a ote with the 204. Not a bad chunk of timber either------Cowboy

High rings are a must with the 527 action unless the bolt handle is modified. My 527 Varmint has a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40 scope mounted in Warne high rings and the bolt handle just barely clears the ocular bell. There are no doubt some scopes that don't even clear the bolt handle with high rings.
