So, just kinda spur of the moment picked up a CZ858 from Alex at Royal Sportsman. Actually, Alex was sold out but his gunsmith sold me the one he'd bought, still in the plastic.

I am loving this rifle so far, let me tell you.

I have some questions, though.

A) I only have the fixed stock but will probably pick up a folder in short order. How do you get the screw to loosen - I couldn't turn it at all? The grip screw loosened off with a bit of torque...

B) The upper handguard - I know the 'wood' comes off the metal, but how?

C) The lower handguard - how does it come off?

D) The VZ/CZ flashhiders that are for sale - do they just thread on - and what's the thing in the parts kit that screws on and replaces the normal threaded 'whatever-the-heck-it-is' - I'm guessing blank-firing adapter?

E) Bit more opinion then how to - what's the consensus on an easy but reliable optic-mounting solution?

F) Same as above - the furniture has a certain 1960's comblock utilitarian je ne sais quoi, but I've decided that this rifle is gonna be black. What's the consensus on doing this; again, easy but reliable? Truck-bed liner, poly-tape, spray-paint, other?

If you can post pics, especially of your success/failures for the last two, that'd be great.

Thanks!

Start searching and reading buddy

Hi homesick ... you bought yourself a great little gun. Get on the forum search and all your questions will be answered (plus more). Everything you asked is already in here and explained in detail. You just need to look around.

Have fun!!

Yah but hes gotta fish through nearly 1000 posts for that info.

I personally like the wood, as it matches the ak styling and era of the rifle itself. Also is said to be shatterproof and extremely durable. I find it quite comfortable. Some people have used tire irons etc to get that screw off. Its on good, its tightened on to never come off during combat use. Someone actually smashed the whole darn thing to get it off, if you find the thread with him...lol.

DLASK makes a muzzle brake ak74 style and Marstar has the grand power ones. Both are said to work, im hearing the Marstar ones are slightly better. I have a DLASK one, and yes they simply thread on. Takes all of 3 seconds.

One of the end caps is a blank firing adapter, one of them is a guide which you slide your cleaning rod through, then attatch to the end of the muzzle as a guide and to avoid crown damage etc etc.

If you go through the millions of threads on scope mounts, it can be done, but is not exactly a simply a b c with this gun. Various ideas are around, gotta fish for them cuz theres quite a few.

I have actually read most of them at one time - there's lots good out there but (specifically the main thread) there's just too much and I can't remember everything from 6-8 months ago when everyone was really talking a lot about this - plus there's probably people who haven't chimed in who can point me in the right direction.

The first three I couldn't find/search/remembering reading about at all.

A) The Screw is quite difficult to loosen but not impossible. You need a proper bit and enough leverage to get it done. Just some food for thought if you notice on your rifle where it shows the name CZ 858 Tactical-2 P the P stands for Pechota (Infantry in english) just like the original (VZ58 P) So, although the stocks are removable they are not intended to be removed. The 858 Tactical V or (VZ58 V) where V is Vystkar (paratroopers or special forces in english) the Stocks are folders.

B) There is a metal half circle spring bracket that locks the wood in place....you have to pry the lip of the bracket back and rotate the wood out.

C) Yes it does punch out the pin and pul out the lower handguard

D) Yes they thread on and yes it is a blank firing adapter

E) there are several custom ideas out there most comon being the russian POSP side mount for POSP scope. Josef D (fellow countryman) is developing a rail system as well as myslef, I do computer aided design in autocad and other CADcam software....so hopefully the schooling will pay off hehe

F) You can paint it anyway you want ;-) .....yes your method should work fine .....several other people here did it and I belive they posted several pictures.

cheers

Get the old paint blast off completely, then use DuraCoat matte black, or some Diamond-Like-Carbon black stuff. Takes less than 30 hours to cure, but they recommend 45 days to fully harden. Great stuff, don't use the spray on crap LeBaron sells.

Oh yeah, when finished, POST PICS!!! :)

It is best to put the reciever in a padded vice and use a BIG bastard screwdriver to get the bolt undone. I made a screwdriver with a T piece handle to do the job.

Here is a thread on how to mount a SVD mount for a red dot. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63636&page=2
It's the same basic principle as palinak's fellow countyman has used.

The stock comes up nicely with a little bit of love and tru-oil

I just thought of this today... you could probably take the "furniture" to a furniture refinishing place and tell them you want it extremely-durable and matt-black.

It'd probably cost a lil more than spray cans, but I am sure it'd look 100 times better.

Just an idea.

FWIW, I'm not hearing a lot of positive reports on the folding stock. Most seem to dislike shooting with it. Whatever floats your boat.

I love the Folder! I think the CZ shoots fine with it on and looks sweet. I broke my orignal stock tring to remove the bolt....good thing I had s spare in the parts kit.

As I stated before in a previous thread, a tire iron (the cross type, not the L shape) worked fine for me for removing that stock bolt. Even with that there was some fair resistance!!! No doubt some Huge Croatian gave up shoveling coal after 30 years of hard labour to start installing VZ fixed stocks LOL (or maybe it was that old woman shown in the girls and guns photo thread??)! Give that a shot, though I know some have reported this not working for them.

i have an EASY-OUT that works really well to undo the screw. there is a large and sharp lock washer under it that has dug into the stock. i could lend it to you or just come over one night. the folder for me works way better. the platic/wood stock hurt my face too much. i added a piece of foam pipe insulation from home depot. $2, stock is soft and warm :)

Ugliest fusking woman I've ever laid eyes on! LOL.

As for stock bolts, I just use the biggest screwdriver I can find from Princess Auto or Crappy Tire. Princess quality will do. It's not hard work for the tool, and it's only needed occasionally. Not like I ever scrape gaskets with a large flat screwdriver or anything!.
