Hello fellow gun nutz,
I recently picked up 2 extra magazines for my 858. The fellow behind the counter said to me "dont bother pulling out the pin..the springs are cut so you cant fit 30".... now i do not have the intent of doing this but is that true? i have a hard time believing this.. the reason i picked up more magazines is i have 1 that is giving me feeding issues all of a sudden. are they easy enough to take apart and clean/diagnose?

I've never seen one with a cut spring, other than the one I cut down to make a "20 round size" short magazine.

The way the mags are riveted through the spine, they would not function with a shorter spring.

First, as already stated, it's factually false. Second, why the heck would anyone say that in the first place? Was there some sort of joke going on?

I am not sure why it was said I must look like I'm up to no good! This happend at a very popular edmonton store. My guess is the salesman just wants to discourage people from even trying.

Now that's great customer service!

Staff: "Enjoy your new rifle, sir/madam. Oh, and don't bother committing X or Y or Z crime with it... It has a magical off switch that renders it inoperable at the first sign of trouble."

Customer: "Oh... I see. Do you have a different model, then?"

What an :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug:. I've actually modded all my mags so that instead of that damn pin there Is a plastic blocker. This way i can actually clean them, because they are the only part I've actually found that accumulates rust that is not easily cleanable.

I've heard about this before, but are we confident that stands up as legal pinning or blocking? I've never had to unpin or repin any of my magazines, but I thought that California mags with plastic stoppers in them weren't good enough for us up here?

Why are you worried about it? Its only an issue if LE wants to check your mags. With the current RCMP crowd I wouldn't consider anything legal. They're more than capable of charging citizens with whatever excuse they wish when it involves firearms.

This seems, unfortunately, correct. But yeah a blocker, so long as it cannot be removed without a tool, is good to go. Apparently the fuzz isnt looking for rivets. they just want to make sure you cant fit more than 5 in there.

not true in 30 rds mag , only in shorten mags.

You cannot modify a spring in this particullar case to only allow for first five rounds to feed and not to feed more should you be ignorant enough to remove that pin. It's physically impossible unless the manufacturer would install an actual physical block inside of that mag, which they would not since it is only canadian retarded law feature. CZ would not waste any more then that 1 rivet per mag. They must have a good laugh about that, although I'm not sure if it actually is CZ to do this or if there is any dealer licensed to obtain 30 rnd. mags and install the pins before it all goes to retailers. Either way, I would strongly discourage to do this, not on any moral grounds but if you get caught, good luck to you.
