Czech Surplus 7.62x54r

Hmmm..that ammo looks Chinese

I was thinking the same thing. I've had 2 cases of Czech surplus and it was grey/green with lots of clear coating on the cases. It fired well but has ejection problems due to too much lacquer. Not the same stuff as in the pic.

I think the Chinese stuff is better than the two previous batches of Czech ammo that I had. THere was so much lacquer that it was hard to chamber or extract cases. Though both the Chinese and Czech shot well, the Chinese had no chamber issues.

I've had issues with Chinese ammo in my SVT-40. I've read that many SVT's have weaker firing pin springs after being factory refurbished. The Chinese ammo seems to have incredibly hard primers where as other surplus ammo is fine. About 1 in 5 rounds wouldn't go off in my rifle. I now only use the one case of Chinese ammo I have in my Mosin since it doesn't have a problem with it and I have a couple cases of Bulgarian which my SVT loves.

The Chinese ammo does shoot noticeably larger groups in both my SVT and Mosin. The Bulgarian ammo with my terrible eyes and stock iron sights can shoot 5-6" at 100yds where as the Chinese is nearly always 7-8".

I was just wondering does anyone know if the Chinese stuff Corrosive ?? and what about the Bulgarian or Czech stuff . Plus the range I belong to does'nt want us to shoot steel core anymore either . these new rules are starting to grate on my nerves .

Yes, they are all corrosive.

Don't let that scare you, just remember to use hot water or windex before your usual clean up.

Do they specify just steel core? A lot of surplus stuff is steel core but a lot it also bimetal jacketed. That means lead core with a copper plated, steel jacket. Some ranges just ban steel core, some ranges will allow bimetal jacketed ammo if you show them a sectioned bullet from the case you have. Just use a hacksaw and cut the bullet above the case neck and see if there is a steel core or not. The magnet test wont tell you if it's just a core, bimetal jacket, or both.

As far as I know they just banned steel core . pistol and rifle . I don't get the pistol part . a rifle might damage the backstop a little - it's very thick armour plate on an angle but a pistol round at 55 yards well I don't think so . I don't make up the rules . also banned is Zombie targets and anything that looks slightly humanoid . someone has too much time to think .

A blanket ban is a lot easier especially with pistol calibre carbines and rifle calibre pistols being so common.

Or they ran into a PR problem when some sensitive person saw something that offended them. Or they heard about PR problems at other ranges and decided to be proactive. Or some members wife/brother/sister/cousin/aunt/grandpa who came out as a guest one day got all offended and made a big stink.
Unless you know why a rule was made, changed, or added all you can do is aimlessly guess at a cause.

Put 60rounds of this stuff through my PU today. Groups the same as my Bulgarian silver tip, but smells much better ha. Had 2 FTF, first time in a couple thousand rounds of surplus ammo I've shot.
