I just examined an SKS-D that has fired approximately 600 rnds of Czech surplus over the last four months and which has never been cleaned. It was filthy as can be but much to my surprise there was no corrosion anywhere!

You can also be suprized when a drop of sweat lands on part of your gun that has corrosive power fouling. It only takes a couple of days for that rust to start pitting.

+1 for humidity being a factor. I shot off about 40 rounds of czech 54r the other day out of my svt-40 and when I took the gun apart after I got home (about 1.5 hours after shooting) the gas cylinder and gas valve were already pretty rusted :(.

That being said, the only problem I have had with rust and the czech 7.62x39 in my chicom SKS is rusting in the gas tube. The barrel is always fine but there is usually a small amount of surface rust in the gas tube after a day at the range.

I use Czech surplus ammo a lot, but I always clean my rifles properly straight after using it, especially after reading what everyone else has had to say about it here on CGN. I really expect rust everywhere on this uncleaned SKS but there was absoulutely none, not even in the gas tube. The SKD-D which this one was, does not have a chromed barrel.

One word: weird. I do exact same thing with exact same timing very often and never noticed any rust as I cleaned. Always do complete takedown and cleaning of SVT. Are those parts blued well on yours?

I've shot corrosive through my FN49, SKS, and VZ58.

I do three cleanings over two days with windex, soap and water, and CLP; one right after shooting (while on the range), 2nd when I get home (most thorough), 3rd at home on the second day (pretty thorough again)

All cleanings involve a complete stripping. I do this with all my guns except my ruger 10/22 - it gets one cleaning only.

- maybe this is overkill but I love my guns.

Here are some pics of the gas piston, it was rusted so bad after the 38 rounds that it was starting to become pitted. The end where it screws into the housing was fine, but the mouth of the piston got it the worst. There isn't alot of blueing left on it either (see the 2nd pic).

My SVT also has trouble extracting the czech milsurp 54r, I have the gas valve cranked as high as it will go and the empties barely eject out of the action. I think the furthest I had one eject was just over a foot.

That's what makes mine different - blueing on mine is like new.

When I clean, I do a complete takedown, remove gas regulator and pour 2-3 cattles of scalding water thru the bore. While I am at it, the gas regulator parts are sitting in a mixture of acetone, kerosene and a bit of mineral oil. Then cleaning with patches as usual.

That's alright Dave, just don't insult anyone directly, it's against the rules.;) Please don't have a stroke.

BTW, did you notice any rust in/on your 858 after the shoot? I poured Dr. Pepper down the bore for you when you weren't looking. It neutralizes those nasty corrosive salts, right?:D
