D***ned "prohib." barrel length!

I've seen several M1/M2 conversions, and owned one for a while. The fellow I bought it from said he bought it from the Hudson's Bay Co. The full-auto switch had been removed, but it still had the M2 mag catch. Imagine my shock when I dismantled it and found the trip lever was still in place. Of course, he had no idea of the significance of the M2 stamping. These carbines may have been the first converted autos sold in Canada, long before all the other CAs hit the market, and were then banned. I assume there are still quite a few out there, mostly owned by people who are unaware that they own prohibited CAs. Some of them are probably registered as M1s while others have likely been re-barreled and are believed to be non-restricted. It should make for some interesting press releases when the government decides to sieze them and prosecute their owners.

I don't have the reference any more, but I remember reading that after the M2 was designed, in the interest of simplifying production, all carbine receivers were milled to accept the full-auto parts whether they were to have the conversion installed or not, and whether they were to be marked M1 or M2. Can anyone verify this?
